...Today has made me smile... Checking the latest listings at one of the UK's best photographic auctioneers, there is a GEC Transistor Radio which has an integral Kodak Instamatic camera! You couldn't make it up... And the funny part is that those radios most probably were used to follow a football match during the weekend while taking some pictures with the family than listening to music.

Yashica-chic or Yashica kitsch...?
View Attachment
It's the 1962 Shiga Yashica Sailor Boy figure...it's a weird figure as he's trying to pull his trousers over a bare behind; I'm not quite sure what sort of corporate message it is supposed to be sending! I've seen another version with green boots and a white cross in the place of the white dot on the pupil of the open eye.
To be honest, if it wasn't for this Forum it would be about the last thing I'd buy but it definitely classifies as a 'Novelty'. The green shoe version (8-inch) may have been designed for display by preferred Yashica dealers over the more common red shoe guy. Just a wild guess.

OK folks, I admit I'm finding it more difficult to grab hold of rare Yashica or Contax novelty items as between us, we seem to have found most of them. But, I think I may have found one that nobody here has ever seen.... This is a Yashica Christmas Candle Set from around 1963... Shiga Xmas candle setAs you can see, it features Shiga, the Yashica Sailor Boy, and still inside the box is an accompanying wax Christmas tree. To find an undamaged Shiga candle from the early 1960s is rare enough but to find the boxed set has been very lucky. I can only assume it was an unwanted Christmas present for someone who used a Yashica camera. His or her indifference to the boxed contents has been our gain...

Hot on the heels of the Shiga Xmas candle above was this item - a leather Contax Pen-case. Contax Pen Case_Targa In my various searches, I had not come across this item so the sight of it came as a surprise. Suffice to say, it has now found a home in Wales. Very nicely made, it can house a couple of full-size fountain pens or even a 3-pen set comprising, fountain and ball-point pens plus a propelling pencil. I have illustrated the inside of the case by adding a couple of examples of my other obsession which is Sheaffer Targa Pens. Here you can see the Fred Force 10 Targa set from 1992 which features the very distinctive cable twist styling to the pens' bodies which are made from palladium with gold-plated details plus a 18K gold nib instead of the usual Targa 14K version. I don't usually buy the metal Targa pens but opt instead for their lacquer models, some of which are outstandingly beautiful. Regardless of which Targa fountain pen you find, of all of the fountain pens I've used since the 1950s, these have the best nibs and enhance the quality of your hand-writing. Just as with Contax and Yashica, there are occasions when only the best will do - and the other quality that all three marques share (at least from their classic periods) is reliability. Earlier in this thread, I showed a Contax Ceramic Pen, it will be placed permanently inside this case, along with its original box.

Never let it be said that I don't try to find the most obscure items for you... And here's another Yashica gem from 1964 which has arrived in Wales today... Shiga lemon squeezer setWould you credit it? A Yashica Sailor Boy Lemon Squeezer Set comprising, the said squeezer, 3 small mugs and the two large orange mugs which feature the Shiga logo. The squeezer and 3 smaller, yellow mugs seat inside the two orange ones to form the set. It appears it was part of a promotion for the new Half-17 - ' the perfect picnic camera'...

OK. Following hot on the heels of the lemon squeezer set is this amazing 1966 dealer promotion for the new Electro 35. Shiga Dinghy for Electro 35 As you might be able to see, it is an inflatable dinghy which features Yashica Sailor Boy riding a dolphin; it also features, prominently, the name of the Electro 35. This has been opened for the first time and is larger than I was expecting, meaning I can't use my usual set-up to picture it. Until I have the breath to inflate it and a large infinity background sheet, this piccie will have to suffice. An inflatable boat to promote an electronic rangefinder, hmmm, run that past me again.... This and the previous post show an outdoors theme that was evidently running through the marketing brains of Yashica in the mid-1960s. I have also just discovered a Yashica Picnic Set - no Shiga logo on that, just the Yashica brand - but it would seem to maintain the theme though I have yet to discover how the picnic set was being used - consumer prize or incentive, or perhaps another dealer promotion? We'll see....

Great findings!!!... The lemon squeezer is the craziest novelty so far, but makes a little bit of sense knowing that there was also a picnic set available. But why the outdoorsy theme?... a little strange for a consumer prize, incentive, or dealer promotion. "Buy a camera and get an inflatable boat!"

OK - I've tried to avoid buying this for the last 3 months since spotting it in Japan but I felt sorry for the lack of interest so it's now found a home in Wales: it's the Yashica Picnic Set dating from 1966. Electro 35 Picnic SetThe year may give you the clue; yes, it's yet another strange promotional item for the launch of the Electro 35. I suppose the idea is that you should take your take your new rangefinder with you on family outings and so to encourage you, here is a 4-place picnic set... Or something like that. We have witnessed some strange Electro 35 promotions: the darts set, inflatable boat, lemon squeezer, playing cards and now this... The sake must have been flowing like water in the marketing department...

Here's a rather pleasing item to celebrate the 1979 launch of the Contax 139 Quartz - an elegant mug bearing the camera's name. 139 Quartz mugThis was a reward sent to the first 1,000 people in Japan who registered their new ownership of the superb new Contax camera. Until I saw it last week, I had no idea such an item existed but I'm pleased to say it's here now so it can be shared with our Members. Anyone here got one too?

This very pleasing, if heavy, quartz-controlled clock has just arrived from the US and is now ticking away in the midst of my Contax and Yashica goodies. Quartz-timed clockI think it was originally a dealer display item. One AA battery is all that's needed to get it running; the noise of that ticking clock is really very calming...

Very nice find, congrats!... any idea about the year? Hi Ariel , thank you for your kind words. I don't know the date for sure but I reckon it's likely to have been 1980 as that would coincide with the launch of Yashica's FX-D Quartz, the Contax 137MD Quartz and it would also fit with the Contax 139 Quartz which had been launched in mid-1979. Given that the Quartz symbol and the legend 'Quartz Cameras' appear prominently on the clock face, it would make sense for it to be at a time when both Yashica and Contax had introduced cameras with quartz-controlled timing which formed a key element of their marketing effort. What I find interesting is that the clock has a very prominent ticking sound, something you would associate with an analogue time-piece and not the new world of silent, quartz-controlled electronics. Kienzle, who manufactured the clock, must have been instructed to keep a ticking noise; I'm glad they did as it adds a very pleasing, reassuring sound to the room. I've also discovered that replacement movements are readily available so if the current mechanism fails one day, it can be rescued and live on for at least another 40+ years...

I was thinking the same, and the FX-D Quartz came to my mind too. Then, I have tried to find some information on that hexagonal red Q symbol, but I do not see it in any of the C/Y cameras nor documents (manuals, brochures, pictures, etc.), so not sure if it was something general from that era or created by C/Y.

I thought I might have a go at looking up graphical US trademarks to see what I could find, but no exact matches popped up, either to red colored Q's or just Q's in general. It's probably not close enough to matter, but Timex did have a registered trademark very similar (a stylized hexagonal Q) issued by USPTO on Feb. 24, 1981, and cancelled: Nov. 24, 1987. It turns out that Kienzle is Germany's oldest clock maker, and made dashboard clocks for Rolls Royce and Mercedes, so the manufacturer has a quality reputation. If there's a German equivalent to a trademark registration search online, that might offer better date details. And, speaking of both the FX-D and the Contax 139... I found an interesting internal comparison in the WayBack archives.
