Well - it didn't go as planned! Loaded the test roll and when I got out to shoot after driving about 60 miles - it wasn't working! The meter lights just flickered and died - and that was that. New batteries in the grip so that wasn't it. I had my Nikon FM2n with me - same camera battery - so tried that - nothing! Shoved it back on the shelf at home and sulked. Yesterday I had a thought - maybe the battery out of the FM2n has enough charge to work the simple meter in that mechanical camera but not enough for the Contax? Stuck two new LR44 batteries in the Contax and SHE'S ALIVE!!!!! wahooooo

The more electronic controls on a camera, the more critical battery voltage becomes. This is basically the sister model to the Yashica FX-D Quartz, is it not?

Indeed, it can be quite unnerving when these cameras suddenly play dead without prior warning. On the other hand, this bridged circuit system prevents the light meter from false readings once battery power is low so, in a sense, the bug is a feature. After all, it's no big thing to tape a couple of spare batteries to your neckstrap--the cheapest alkaline LR44s will do--and that's that. I've had half a dozen of such Quartz Contaxes and Yashicas and all their light meters are absolutely spot-on. (I wish I could say the same thing about my Nikon F3...) Michael

Thanks for the info guys - very much appreciated!
Well - I used it today with a nice little Yashica 28mm F/2.8 I picked up at the weekend. What an absolute joy of a camera to use! Using that and the new Fuji X-T1 - looking through the viewfinder of the Fuji thinking "What a great viewfinder" - then looking through the Contax and thinking - O-M-G... now THAT is a viewfinder LOL!
I hope the shots are ok - because on feel and useability this baby gets a 10!

Judging from those pics of yours I have seen so far, I'd bet my behind on that... Having rather long, but slim hands, ergonomics isn't exactly tops on my (otherwise long) list of this camera's assets. I'm not a fan of motor winders either, and I really hate SLRs getting taller than they're wide (like those Nikon F's when equipped with the full array of extra handles, winders and what not.) In the case of these small SLRs, however, I wonder if the winder might not provide precisely that extra grip I am sometimes missing and I'm thinking of getting one for my 139 Quartz and FX-Ds (if I'm not mistaken, the Contax winder is compatible with the Yashi FX version.) Michael Yes, Michael, the winder for the FX-D came from the Contax. Kind of funny that Yashica would sell a camera with winding capabilities, and not have a winder to go with it when released to the market. I guess the guys in the winder department were not having a good day. PF

PF Unless they figured that they made a marketing mistake with the earlier FR winder, where too many end-users opted for the less-expensive Yashica version over the pricier RTS winder to make such future redundancy no longer logical as a business decision.
