Hello All,
I recently read somewhere (maybe in this forum?) that the Yashica serial numbers were organized by the first digit signifying the year, the next tow the month, and the remainder being its sequence that month in production. I bought my original TL-Electro new in 1976, but unfortunately I don't know its number since it was stolen years ago. I do however have another but its number is 801XXXXX, implying it was made in January of 1978 (since the model was introduced in 1972). That somewhat surprises me as I thought follow-on models may already have been introduced by then.
My question is, how long was the TL-Electro in production? All the sources I can find state when it was started, but not when it ended.
Incidentally, I have a TL-E, its SN is 910XXXXX; this implies October of 1969 which makes sense for that model.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Paul Sokk has quite a bit of info on his YashicaTLR site that addresses the TLR model serial numbers and a few of the later models. I don't have any details to help with TL serial numbers specifically - but - I do have some details for production dates on various body and body/lens models released in the TL series. The models below that have no ending production dates are believed to be correct for their starting year, and taken from several official sources, or from supporting company documents. The models shown with end dates, are compiled from what I believe to be accurate, official company or dealer sources. I'm still in the process of verifying production dates for all Yashica/Contax models, so these may not be definitive yet. Yashica TL Super w/ f/1.4 | Apr/1966 - ? | Yashica TL Super w/ f/1.7 | Dec/1966 - ?
| Yashica TL Electro X
| Sep/1968 - 1974
| Yashica TL
| Nov/1968 - 1969 | Yashica TL-E
| Aug/1969 - ? | Yashica TL Electro X ITS
| Oct/1970 - 1975
| Yashica TL Electro
| Mar/1972 - ?

With the exception of the multiple Electro 35 rangefinder models that span more than 2 decades - 1966-1987 (GSN/GTN) - most models don't have a run longer than 5 or so years like the ITS, although some do overlap from time to time. More often than not, the newer model seems to replace the old one, as far as production runs go.

Thanks for the info! I look forward to hearing anything you find out. Maybe as far as the TL-Electro goes, they just kept making them until the parts inventory ran out. And possibly that could have extended it just past 5 years extending production into 1978 explaining my late serial number; maybe I have one of the last batch of TL-Electros made.
