Hi,
I've heard that there is an affordable Chinese version of the original lens hood for the Distagon 4.0/18mm. Unfortunately, my own internet research hasn't yielded any results yet, so I'd be very grateful for any further hints you might be able to provide.

From what I gather, Michael, it's a two piece affair, with a 70mm ring acting as the hood, and a 70/86 step-up ring (to hold the 86mm filters) added to that (too much of the front element protrudes to put a filter right on the front). The stepper wouldn't be needed if you are not using filters. I'd say find a cheap 70mm filter, take the glass out of it, and add a generic 70/86 stepper ring. It's going to vignette badly wide open though. www.pebbleplace.com/reviews/slr/contax_18mm_distagon/index.htmlPF

Thanks a lot, PF. You are right, of course, with your caveat about vignetting...
What I did not mention is that I've only had this lens for a couple of days so I can't tell how much IQ is actually impaired by the absence of a hood. I guess I had rather test the lens for a while to find out if I really need it.

The Zeiss 18mm has very good flare resistance and can mostly be used without a hood. At least in the MM version which I have owned twice. I would recommend getting a 70/86 ring and a K84 metal hood as I beleive the supplied rubber slip on cap is too close to the front element and can cause fine scratches in the centre of the front element.
PS If there is a cheap take on the 70/86 ring I’d like to know about it as it’s also used on the PC Distagon and can be a little fragile in use too.

That's a nice re-configuring of that Mamiya hood, Peterr. Welcome to the forum!
