There are a few cameras which should be on any keen 35mm photographer's bucket-list and imho this should be one of them: it's the superb Zeiss Ikon Icarex 35S TM. There is also a 35S BM, but it uses a bespoke bayonet mount and the TM works with M42 lenses, hence its attachment to the Tomioka Yashinon 60mm f2.8 Macro lens you can see below. Icarex 35S Tomioka 60mm f2.8The Icarex is one of the smoothest cameras to operate; certainly it's worthy of the Zeiss ikon name. This one arrived with a Zeiss 50mm f2.8 Tessar attached; one day I'll sell some gear and buy the Zeiss 50mm f1.8 Ultron concave lens of deserved legend. Well, you only live once...

Here's a bit of fun... It is Digital Dream's l'espion digital 'spy camera', launched in 2002. Digital Dream lespionBoasting a whopping great 0.1Mp CMOS sensor, it offers a maximum resolution of 352x288 and up to 16s of AVI filming. Its inbuilt memory is 2Mb which allows storage of up to 20 images at its highest resolution or 80 at 176x144. It has a 10s self-timer too. This is an unused copy of the tiny camera; it appears to be working properly but I can't tell yet if the sensor is recording data and I'm curious to see just what the IQ is like (no great expectations!). Unfortunately, the bundled software does not like my current OS so I may have to dig out my ancient Windows 98 machine. If I can eventually find a way to extract images, I'll upload one for your amusement.

Linux could be a good alternative, maybe trying with a live image first. It seems that the camera has the STV680 chipset and showing listed as supported by gPhoto: Camera Model: DigitalDream l'espion Additional Abilities: Image Capture, Liveview If Linux is not able to see/access the internal storage directly after connection via USB, then gPhoto has also a command line option which could be used to download the pictures from it. Here is a comment about it, from 2002 with an example of the command used: $ gphoto2 --port usb --camera "l'espion by DigitalDream" --get-all-files If that was working in 2002 on Linux, most probably still does.

Hi Ariel , Thank you for taking the trouble to dig out alternative means of grabbing an image; I've never used Linux but I have found an old XP laptop so I'll upload the driver and see what happens. If all else fails, I'll load Linux onto an old drive and try that approach...

Every now and then, you might feel a whim coming upon you and before you know it, it's turned into a camera... Well, here's a fine example: it's an Iloca Stereo II camera dating from around 1952. Iloca Stereo IIIt is a well-made camera and weighs around 1lb 12oz. ( 0.8kg). It uses a Prontor S shutter, offering speeds from 1s-1/300s plus B and apertures from f3.5-f16. It also features a 10s self-timer. It has two Jlitar 35mm f3.5 lenses and images are produced on 35mm film in the old Realist format ( 24x23mm) with a frame counter running to 30 images. It has an accessory shoe and a PC-sync socket for a flash. The most unusual aspect of this camera is that the viewfinder is centred below the lenses; I've not come across that before. A stereo-viewer is also on its way to enable the photos to be seen to proper effect.

Here is a special camera with a brilliant trick up its sleeve... It is the Konica Autorex and at the flick of a switch, it can change from 35mm full format to 35mm half-frame! Konica AutorexThis and its sibling the non-metering Autorex P, are the only 35mm SLR cameras that can do this; it's magical! Other than the half-frame option, it is a typical 1965 SLR with conventional specs. It's shown with its kit lens, the excellent Hexanon 52mm f1.8.

This has to be one of the most beautiful cameras I have ever seen. This British-made folder was made in 1933, when the Art-Deco movement was in full swing, and it shows its influence in the amazing patterned design of the body and the shutter/lens plate. It is the Ensign Selfix 20, manufactured by London's Houghton-Butcher. Ensign Selfix 20 comboI was very lucky to find one in its original packaging. It has a variable focusing Ensar Anastigmat 105mm f7.7 lens and a basic set of shutter options with a modest top speed of 1/100s. It shoots 8 images on 120 film. This one is almost mint with clear glass, an accurate shutter and light-tight bellows. Magical despite being more than 90 years old!
