Very interesting. I'd love to know the serial number of the ML 24mm - I bet it was a late one as some of the last batches had issues with quality control. I have three 24mm lenses all of which have centre sharpness that is better than the Zeiss 25mm but only one of them has poor edge definition and it's a late serial numbered version.

I had a 24ML for a bit, just to try it out and my impressions chimed quite well with the 16:9 review. I was honestly disappointed in the 24ML. I had high hopes for it after being delighted by the ML 21.
While I was using an A7r I tried quite a few different 24s and in my mind the the Olympus Zuiko 24 & Canon FD are comfortably better across the frame than the Yashica. The Zuiko being easily the sharpest at wider apertures, although I know mine was in the sweet spot serial range being multi-coated but pre cost cutting.
I also felt that the Sigma super-wide II to be at least as good as the Yashica and easily the best value proposition at 24mm. I won't mention Tokina and Vivitar...
The only one I would consider shooting wider than f4 on A7r would be the Olympus. Obviously with copy variation all may change - I had 2 Canon FDs with very different quality levels..

I completely agree with barryreid about the quality of the little Sigma Super-wide II. I've used one in preference to the Zeiss 25 or ML 24 in places where the lens could take some damage and it's never failed me. Contrast is not quite as good as the C/Y lenses but a scan of the film and a touch of processing easily corrects that very minor shortcoming. It still ranks as one of the best value lenses out there - though again, prices are rising as reviews on various forums sing its praises...
At a time when Sigma had a pretty mixed reputation they actually produced some great glass including the aforementioned 24mm and also the late-numbered 16mm f2.8 Filtermatic fish-eye which is not a million miles away in performance from the ML 15mm, though the Yashica has slightly better contrast and edge definition wide-open.
This has got me thinking again about creating a new section in this Forum for 3rd party lenses with the Contax/Yashica mount...

This has got me thinking again about creating a new section in this Forum for 3rd party lenses with the Contax/Yashica mount... I had precisely the same idea a couple of days ago when tts asked me about my Vivitar zoom. I'll see what i can do...

I'm working on comparison between my ML 24 and Cosina made Exacta 24. So far they go head to head, but Cosina has that close focusing with serious sharpness at it.

I do fully agree - the Sigma Super-Wide II 24/2.8 is a good lens - i've bought it many years ago and it never failed me. :-) Also good on Cropsensor Camera (APS-C) with ~36mm focal length.
