Even though it's the least expensive of the ML macros, I was quite excited when I managed to get this lens (mounted on an FR-1) for 45 euros on ebay last week. However, my enthusiasm waned considerably when the lot arrived yesterday; both camera and lens were unspeakably dirty and grimy and reeked strongly of stale cigarette smoke. The lens had two nasty dents in the filter ring, but I had known this before and dismissed it as quite irrelevant for my purposes. What the seller did not tell me was that the aperture blades were completely stuck in wide-open position... So I took the lens apart up to the point shown in the second image and then decided not to proceed any further but to put the whole thing into a marmalade jar and bathe it in lighter fluid so that both sides of the blades were fully immersed. When the aperture was clean and snappy again, I put a tiny amount of grease on the helicoid until that grinding metallic sound stopped and it moved smoothly again. Seems to be working fine now so I think I can make some first tests with my S2 tomorrow. There are a couple of frames left on the film I used for the Tokina 135mm so there's going to be some interesting (if slightly unfair) competition... Michael

Well done! I also have a ml 55mm f4 with aperture issue. Going to wide open is no problem. But when i want to stop down the aperture it often stucks somewhere in between. Then i have tot shake it a little and usually it closes while doing that. Strange.

Yeah, when you get a piece of gear like that, you want to put on the rubber gloves first, then bath it in alcohol. Hope it works good for you, Michael.

Are you talking about disassembling or just shall i just put the while thing in alcohol bath? Yashimo, my comment was directed at Michael, but what I meant was to clean the outside with alcohol. Usually with cotton pads made for make-up removal dipped in isopropyl alcohol (IPA), or the 92% stuff you can get at the drugstore/pharmacy. This at least gets that layer of crud off it so it can be handled normally, and kills any germs living in the goo. You don't want to soak the whole lens in the stuff, because then you'll have to do a complete teardown. PF
