Hello everyone,
I was searching for some info on repairing a yashica j but I couldn't find anything.
The problem is that the shutter button is really loose and the shutter won't go open.
when I press the button i feel no resistance, everything seems to work I opened the top as far as I could because some buttons hold it back and i got off the down side. Everything I can see works. I am a noob at repairing so I didn't managed to get more apart. I hope anyone could help me with it or knows what it could be.

Hello there and welcome to the Forum. I don't know of any info on repairing a Yashica J but if there's any out there, a great place to check would be: rangefinderforum.com/classics/forum/messages/board-topics.html We owe a great debt to the excellent RangefinderForum for acquiring the classic camera repair pages previously available through kyphoto. I'm not sure if you can still search the pages so it will probably require a long slog through all the Archive sections in the hope for a J reference; methinks I do remember seeing one some years ago... In the meantime, if I come across something relevant, I'll post details here. Sadly, it's uneconomic to get it repaired as you can buy a replacement for around 25% of the cost of a repair. There is a beauty on Ebay right now (item: 121909435436) that is described as for parts/not working but if you read the description it's absolutely fine - just needs new light seals sometime soon - and it has its case too, and quite a bargain price!

Welcome to the Forum, Eric. I dragged out my J to see what the symptoms were you are describing. The shutter button on mine has very little resistance, so there must not be much of a return spring on them. The non-opening shutter is indicative of it sticking, likely from lens lubricant getting on the blades. The shutters are designed to run clean and dry, and any oil will act like a glue because of the close tolerances on the blades. I was lucky when I got mine, as it works just fine. However, I've had my share of cameras with shutter problems. I think the Copal is a copy of the Compur (by Gauthier), thus the 300 top shutter speed. I don't have documentation of having worked on the Compur (though I know I have), and I have worked on the Compur-Rapid and Synchro-Compur, both more involved than the Compur. But I haven't done a Copal (yet). The closest to your J in construction may be the Ricoh 300 flic.kr/s/aHsjyd8ZUX The shutter is a different design, but you'll get the idea of what it would take to repair your camera. If you decide to work on it yourself, use only naphtha, or Ronsonal lighter fluid (basically the same thing) to flush the shutter parts. One of the nicer aspects of the J is it is a unit focusing type, instead of front cell focusing, which gives you a more accurate focus, and the lens itself creates a sharper image. It's such a deep set lens, you almost don't need a hood for it. Hope you get it all sorted out. PF
