Like I always say, the Ektar is a bitchy primadonna--it can lend your images that very special and uniquely 'Ektarian' hue that I love in the first three pics of your set, or else it can drive you bonkers by producing an excess of cyan and magenta at the same time, which is what I seem to detect in the last shot. I frankly confess that I've never quite made out what subjects to go for to reach the former result and how to avoid the latter, but I'm sure we're all going to miss this film...

Ektar is on when it's on, but lacks the latitude that we grow to expect in most of the other c41 color films. Treat it like slide film, and it is pure gold. Use your most accurate shutter/meter combo. It does not overexposed nicely like Portra, and it handles under exposure about as well as Velvia.

That's certainly true, Mike--the Ektar wants spot-on exposure. Still, I can't help thinking that certain combinations of colors pose more problems than others. Plus, I've never been able to persuade the Ektar to come up with a convincing, 'natural' version of green, but that might be my own fault, of course.

I spent one week drawing color curves for a roll of Ektar film. I had Meijer develop the film, but they surprised me with no Photo CD when I picked up the film. My Linux box has a driver for my CanoScan FS 2710, but with no color curves, or black or white points. Strictly standard exposure settings are needed for the scanner output; I set black and white points for each color. Keeping the red curve flat as a reference (in Gimp) required me to draw a double s curve for green. And I ended up with a digital look and just a guess at the proper contrast curve. Only just a bit remains of the blue shadows that Ektar provides in scans from North Coast Photo. I managed to somewhat tame the greens, and very little is left of any pink glow in the highlights. The virtue of the contrast curve I drew is the highlight recovery for pictures including the sun. Attachments:
