Hi folks,
Following my disappointment at an earlier purchase of what turned out to be anything but a 'near-mint example' of this beautiful lens and great performer, I found someone who was clearing out an old photographic shop that had lost out to the world of internet shopping...a sad but all too common tale!
I mentioned my interest in old Contax and Yashica 35mm gear and he said he'd sold most of it to a collector last week but he then mentioned he'd found a few bits he missed and would I be interested? He produced three ML 100-300s, 2 boxed and one with just its case. 'Give me £100 and they're yours' - needless to say... He also found a Yashica Copy Stand II (was there ever a Copy Stand 1?), some spare camera backs, a FX-103 and a couple of Contax RTW winders. They're all safely in my possession. Piccie of the lenses follows...

Woo-hoo! Now you can do a test of three new production lenses. And how close are the serial numbers?

Woo-hoo! Now you can do a test of three new production lenses. And how close are the serial numbers? PF These new ones and my previous good copy are in the range 8201511 to 8201635; my first purchase, needing repair, is 8200961. I wonder how many were manufactured?
I'm still trying to find out how many of the ML 70-210 f4s were made as the highest serial number I've seen on the web is 7600566 (mine are 153 and 412) so it looks like the estimate of well under a thousand is about right...

I chanced upon one of these for £35 in what turned out to be near mint condition. There isn't too much information available so I'm wondering what to expect. I'm expecting it to be softer at 300mm cf 100mm but really not clear to what degree. I'm only using film which is generally more forgiving than digital.
I took some shots (FP4+) this morning for a small project I'm working on but any insights into likely IQ behaviour would be welcome as I really hate shooting brick walls etc to test lenses....
