Hi,
I would like to get a 2x teleconverter for my Yashica ML 135mm C lens. I know a real tele lens would be much better but I am not going to use it very often and of course it would be quite heavy.
Unfortunately my budget isn't sufficient for a Mutar I and the original "Yashica x2 auto tele converter" is hard to find here in Germany.
What I can get here are converters from Kenko, Komura, Hama, Soligor or Vivitar (I guess these are just brand names, not the manufactures behind them). Any recommendations? I found two versions of the Kenko converter, a MC4 and a MC7. The MC7 is called a "CX MACRO TELEPLUS" converter. Would that one be suitable only for macro photography or also as an normal 2x converter.

Hello bernd and welcome to the Forum! Teleconverters other than the 3 Zeiss Mutars are something of a lottery when it comes to quality. However, the Kenko ones you mention are pretty decent performers, though I would opt for the 7-element versions (MC-7). The macro version to which you refer is simply the same teleconverter but with a helicoid to allow you a variety of macro ratios; it's very useful and I have a couple of this type. The good thing about Kenko-branded ones is that they were made by Tokina and are good performers. There are also Tokina-branded converters and so they come with the same qualities. Yashica made three versions of 2x converters in the C/Y mount but I have had better performance from Tokina MC-7, Teleplus MC-7 and Kenko MC-7 lenses. The Panagor Auto Macro Converter To 1:1 was a nice surprise as, in addition to being a very handy macro converter, it is the only 4-element TC which produced good images with Yashica's ML 135mm and 200mm lenses. I have not used the Vivitar or Paragon TCs. If you can't find a cheap Zeiss Mutar 1, a Tokina, Teleplus or Kenko 7-element teleconverter should be a good alternative.

Hello Biggles3,
thank you very much for the usefull information. I can get a Kenko MC-7 here quite cheap, so I will start with that one and maybe I will wait for an affordable Mutar1.

Just one more question: As far as I know, the MC-7 lowers the apperture about 2 full stops. Does the mechanic in the converter transfer this to the camera. So i.e. when set to 2.8 on the lens the cam is set to 5.6? Or do I have to expose in manual mode?

I used to use the Teleplus version of the Macro MC-7 with the 50/1.4 Zeiss for macro shots, I can't remember having to do anything to compensate for adding or removing the 2x converter. If the camera has TTL exposure, the camera should compensate for the "lower light level" reaching the film.
The Teleplus Macro MC-7 and Vivitar version (I also used until it got stolen) both produced excellent macro and longer distance shots with several of the Zeiss/ML lenses, from 50mm to 200mm. I had no hesitation in using it as a conventional 2x converter as well as for macro.

Bernd Hi, as bobblehat has said, if you are using a camera with TTL metering, it should automatically adjust for the change in exposure values.
