I noted that in a earlier contribution to this thread I had said I would take a piccie comparing it to an earlier Yashica along with its later cousin the FR; I apologise for having forgotten to do this...
TL Eectrol X FX-1 FR 24mms
I hope this makes amends for my oversight. Interesting to note the gradual diminution in size - even more radical if one added the FX-D or other later FX series cameras. I had quite forgotten that the FX-1 also carried the 'electro' symbol and wording which showed its heritage. One other observation: the three 24mm lenses all prove to deliver superb image quality - sharpness and contrast are excellent. The little Sigma is MM-coupled, offers a decent macro range and is substantially smaller and lighter than the Yashica glass. OK - it uses engineering thermo-plastics instead of metal but has proven every bit as resilient as its bigger cousins - and is the only one that came with a dedicated lens hood! The one other 24mm I would have included was the Super Paragon PMC II version, made by Cimko, which is a stunner too. Sadly, I don't have the Kiron 24mm f2 which is a pearl of a lens - at least not yet...

Very nice formation you have there
It would be nice to have the chance of combining the best of each into one body, I would like to take a FR-1 but with the metal curtain and self timer mechanism of the Electro, the shutter release button lock and frame counter mechanism of the FX-1. I think the size and weight of the FR is the best, no too big neither too small. About the plates color, I prefer the black version too and the same for the FX-D, the only thing I do not like is when the bronze color starts to show up in the high wear areas.

... the only thing I do not like is when the bronze color starts to show up in the high wear areas. There might be a few who see something more than wear and tear when bodies start brassing. Signs of paint loss, turns into patina and historical gains, and parachute cord and a pin from a grenade become more than a strap.

<sigh> A black one! I've been thinking of getting one for quite some time, considering the black ones still more elegant than the silver/black version. But of course I don't need yet another camera, do I...? Since when has 'need' governed the decision of a Yashica fan?
Of course, you should have a black one - if only to stop the silver one feeling lonely; you can justify it as an act of kindness...
I see. So there's a moral obligation...
Thanks, Graham! This is precisely the kind of helpful answer I expected to receive from you!

Some time last year, i've had a black minty FX-1 into my watchlist, the price was laughable cheapskate, but i've thought to myself, i have my FR1's, so why bother? I've had seen the counter clicking to zero in front of my eyes...and not placed a bid....the Lightcells into the FR/I/II i've read, are longer lasting than the CdS inside the FX-1. But anyway, needless to say, the FX-1 is a cute, big SLR.
About the "brassing", and paint loss of the black models: Revell 302 enamel paint, and a really fine brush, i get all being fixed, looks like new, suits my FR1 excellent, as well as my Canon, Nikons, etc...i do this trick for decades.
I'd love to own a FX-A, FX-1 is also nice. My fave Allstar SLR from Yashica is simply the FR-I, i do really enjoy shooting with it, it feels pretty much solid, does have the Contax RTS Mirrorbox, well being made. One does feel the weight, quality. The Leatherette doesn't fade, detoriate, unlike the later FX-3 Series, Contax 137/139 Bodies for instance. Only issue is the defective Shuttercounter. I do have 3 copies, on one, the Framecounter is even still working as expected. The FR is also being nice, whileas the FR-II is some sort of cheapskate SLR, not in terms of haptics, but Yashica missed the Shutterspeed Dial here, it's physically there, but only with Auto, B Mode...i dislike when Gear gets physically being crippled.
That action might saved Yashica a few bucks, before the cheaper FX(3) Series arrived...with the FX-3, even the button plate is no more made out of brass, but plasticky...other-wise, a fine mech. SLR, which just works, being small, and it does the trick. Prime on, and excellent shooter SLR for the unexpected picture.
I do wish a nice weekend, and many great Exposures !

My FR-1 is technical the better SLR, but the FX-1 feels more sturdy...of course, i got the black one, as pictured here. Silizium Photocell vs CdS from the FX-1 is technical being better.
