The Yashica TL is the stripped-down economy version of the TL Super. It has a top shutter speed of 1/500 to the Super's 1/1000, and lacks the mirror lock-up of its big brother, but is otherwise the same, aside from some small cosmetic differences. I bought the TL primarily for the chrome-barrel DX 50/2 lens, which was missing from my collection, but the camera is very clean and seems quite nice. For some reason, I had thought that the TL was one of the earlier cameras in the TL series, but its similarity to the TL Super, and the fact that it was designed to use silver-oxide batteries might indicate that it is, in fact, the last of the line, or at least concurrent with the TL Super. I am now one TL-E short of having all of the Yashica TL series SLR cameras. The TL Super was an impulse buy, as I already had one, but at a $15 BIN price including lens and shipping I could not resist. The meter on this one seems more accurate than on my other one, so I got really lucky indeed. Yashica TL Super and TL by Greyscale3, on Flickr

Nice cameras and lenses, greyscale.
I too didn't realize until recently, when I bought my TL Super ($19), that it was the earliest of its series. One would think that something "super" would be a later improvement on something that's not super, right? But as marc says, the TL Super was introduced in 1966, two years after the original Pentax Spotmatic. I was in the market for a Spotmatic in spring of 1968, but I ended up with a Pentax S1a and clip-on meter instead because of the Spotmatic's price and limited availability. I wish I had looked at the TL Super back then.
I also bought mine for the lens--the DX 50 f/1.7--but I'm mighty impressed with the body, too. It's in pristine condition--not a scratch on it--and the meter appears to be right. All I had to do was replace the mirror bumper foam and put in new light seals. Even the inspection sticker is still relatively unscuffed and attached firmly to the back of the top cover--after something like 48 years!
Another thing that's impressive about the camera is its size and heft. It's bigger than any of the Spotmatic/ES series and even bigger than my Pentax KX: 689g vs. 610g for the SP 1000 and 632g for the KX (all without lenses). Of course the mirror lock-up feature is something the Spotmatics and ES Pentaxes never had.
Now I need to get it loaded and get it out for some shooting.

I was completely backwards on the order of manufacture. Thank you for clearing that up.
