Hi folks, Another trip to the blackberry bush with an old piece of glass, this time it was the ' Hollywood' Distagon i.e. the Zeiss 28mm f2 T* lens. Zeiss 28 f2 wide_closeI hope this combined image helps you, if you're unfamiliar with the lens, to appreciate why it is so revered. Both photos were taken this morning, despite the dull, wet and windy conditions, using a Fuji GFX 50S; they were shot from the same position at 1/250s, ISO800, and at f2 using Velvia film simulation. The images have been reduced by 40% to make them web-friendly. Anyone unfamiliar with the Distagon could be forgiven for assuming that a macro-zoom was employed but these were both taken with this prime lens. The use of the floating element in its construction allows one to get within about 9 inches (22cm) of the object and take a perfect picture. It is a wonderfully versatile wide-angle lens. Why Zeiss discontinued it so early in the development of the Contax system remains a mystery as it had garnered an enviable reputation before that start of the 1980s. Sadly, its comparative rarity has made it an expensive quest for many keen photographers and its keen following in the movie industry has not only given it its 'Hollywood' nickname but has further reduced the availability of used lenses. And just to be awkward, when I die I'm taking all of mine with me...

Well it's certainly on my wish list too, and I suspect I'll have to do some selling and trading to get there, but I haven't given up yet. As for the amazing close focusing and more than capable wide angle possibilities, I can always rely on my ML 21mm, to get similar results. I do so love the buttery smooth bokeh of the Hollywood though.

I note that its reputation is catching up with its performance as prices are inching consistently northwards....

The ML price has gone annoyingly high of late (annoying as I sold mine to fund other things, but want another) and I'm not completely sure about the value proposition. However, I think it's a better lens than the similarly priced Olympus OM 21/3.5.

I'd entertain a reasonable offer if you'd be interested in it. Send me a message here on the forum or through Etsy if you prefer.

Unfortunately it's a wish list item as I'm really buying any significant vintage lenses at present - more likely selling - as I've recently picked up an Eos R mirrorless body and am trying to fund a couple of native lenses for it.
