On a very frosty morning earlier in the week I decided to take out the Zeiss 100mm f2 Planar for a bit of exercise as it had been a while since it came out to play. Instead of using a Contax camera or my 'go to' Olympus E-M1 MkIII, it seemed a good opportunity to test the lens on a large sensor, so it was attached via a Kipon adapter to the Fuji GFX 50S. With the superb sensor on the Fuji, it was bound to expose any shortcomings in the lens (and the photographer!), not that any issues were anticipated with the glass. So, shivering in the morning cold in Wales, off we trudged... 100 f2 Planar 80pc crop rThe original image has been cropped by 80% so that one can focus on the late season cluster of blackberries. I hope you agree that the lens is more than capable of delivering excellent IQ on a big sensor, despite any shortcomings of the idiot behind the camera. Unfortunately the big Fuji has no IS (the updated version does) but despite my shivers, a fairly decent shot was captured. This was hand-held at 1/250s, shot at f2 and exposed at ISO800; the camera's 'film' option was set to Velvia. I think the colour rendition is delightful and the Planar, at least to me, has proved that this piece of old glass can out-resolve a medium format digital sensor. It remains a firm favourite.
