So im thinking of buying a yashica fx-1 and ive been given it by the seller to inspect it for myself since he dosent know much. And everything was working fine until i came to the asa dial. it just wouldnt move no mater how much i tried to move it. Do i need to maybe lube it up or do something else because the exposure dial also needs some strenth to move it but nowhere near as much as the asa dial.
Any tips would help out and asap because i need to return the camera in a day or two.

Welcome to the forum, acoharmonikas ... The FX-1 can be rather hard to find, and harder yet to find one fully functional, so with that as a preface, consider that there's value in it for rarity alone, regardless of condition. There is one thing to remember about these models, in that they are unlike any other Yashica SLR body, precisely because of the dial assembly on the rewind side of the camera. The ASA settings dial doesn't work in the same way most might presume, and when trying to set them they do not 'lift up' like most would expect. The entire center post is the battery compartment as well as the rewind lever, and if the center section is pulled up - just as you'd do to release the film cartridge, or change it's battery - you'll see a couple of very small ears or tabs sticking up at 180 degrees opposite each other. Those are the finger grips that turn the ASA dial to set the film speed. They should move easily and with little effort once the center post is lifted out of the way. There should be a small dot as a marker on the edge of the cylinder that's turned, and it will line up with the ASA/ISO numbers on the outer dial to the left edge. Twisting the outer ASA dial just sets the other part of the exposure settings adjustment for the +/- EV stop settings to line up with the marker line to the left of the dial, and it will only turn slightly to accomodate +3/-3 EV. If you're actually adjusting as needed and it still doesn't turn, there's an issue that may be more complex than a dab of oil can fix. Since the battery compartment sits atop the whole dial assembly, I suppose there's the possibility that a leaking battery could foul up what's beneath it, or that someone may have tried forcing the ASA dial and jammed it or broke it entirely since it's rather unique in how it works. If it won't turn, the only sure fire way to know what's wrong will likely mean removing the top and inspecting the entire assembly. Donor parts will be hard to find, so hopefully it's an easy fix. I can't help with the FX-1 but I can tell you to NEVER EVER put any sort of lubricant anywhere in a camera unless you know what you are doing. Here's just one I had recently where someone tried to fix a problem. It's not the first I've had and won't be the last I guess.  |
