OK. I know Yashica serial numbers have had been asked a million times. I am confused about a S/N prefix on the camera body. Mine has a "J" prefix with the numbers being 1090242. When I do a S/N look up do I include the J or not? If yes, then I cannot find a site that has any J prefixes as part of the Body S/N
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Todd in Wisconsin Hi tohitch and welcome to the Forum. Yashica serial numbers can be very confusing and only a few of them adhere to set rules. Todd, I'm assuming the camera to which you refer is a Yashica J - does your model have a black J on a light background or a gold J on a black background? A good example of the sometimes random nature of Yashica's body numbering is that there are Yashica J cameras that start N 90xxxx or H 21xxxx instead of with the usual J... It is possible that your model's number might refer to 196 1, September ( 09), and number 242 on the assembly line. Most Yashica J serial numbers start with J1, J2 or J3 (196 1, 196 2, 196 3?). If this is the formula, then it would make sense that the first digit is the year, the next two refer to the month and the remaining ones show the production number BUT how the N 90xxxx or H 21xxxx works is beyond my comprehension. What is noticeable is that the cameras with the gold J on a black background all seem to start with J.Edit: While I thought I may have had the answer, I've just spotted a camera on Ebay which has a serial number J70xxxx and another J80xxxx which could hole my theory below the waterline although it remains possible that replacement top-plates might start with J7 or J8,,,
