I'd assume these stickers are promotional tie-ins with the 1977 F-1 Grand Prix auto racing series and it somehow revolves around either the FR camera model specifically (released in July of '76) or the entire FR camera line (w/ the FR-I and FR-II, released in April of '77). There's no Yashica PR web pages for the time period - the 1st Yashica.com website appeared in July of 1997 - so unless someone has an old magazine article of some type, or a press release, there's no deep specifics to explain what the promotion was for. The very last Japanese F-1 Grand Prix race took place in 1977, and I'd presume that there was at least some type of sponsorship on one (or more) of the Japanese F-1 drivers or cars in that year's racing circuit. There were 3 drivers from Japan, and 2 racing teams were based in Japan, but it might take a bit of time to see what photos there might be to identify any sponsorships or details on Yashica's involvement. Wiki article on the 1977 Grand Prix season, and another page dedicated to the '77 Mt Fuji Speedway race (#17, of 17 races) A gallery of photos from the '77 Mt Fuji race... f1-facts.com/gallery/r/297

Ah, happy memories of the time when Yashica had money to throw at PR opportunities for the FR... My only concern was that the lines in front of the nose of the F1 car made it look as if it was reversing which I feared was not a good omen. I don't recall Yashica ever being a F1 team sponsor but they did arrange entertainment at the Japanese Grand Prix at which cameras, drives and lenses were loaned for the day. Talking about negative omens, it's somewhat reminiscent in a way of that infamous photo from the late 1970s of the Durex-sponsored F1 car with a flat tyre in the pit lane.

There are "Grand Prix" references later in 1988, probably for similar reasons to lumiworx's explanation. I can only find this image from my collection at the moment ..... pity it's a small image! Yashica Samurai X3.0 Grand Prix 88 - Gold

Yashica Samurai X3.0 Grand Prix 88 - Gold Hi Bob, I saw one of these on a Japanese retail site last year; seeing the asking price left me with PTSD....

I also found this that shows Yashica had a presence at the GPs.

I can only count to ten and rattle off a winter holiday greeting in German, so I'll need to wait for a kind soul to translate and summarize. :)

Thanks Peter. Now I know why I wasn't aware of it... "This app is not available for any of your devices". It seems I can do the same trick with camera mode in Google Translate, so I'll need to remember there are a few extra options in the app itself.
I'm guessing this was a regional contest, since it mentions round-trip tickets from Germany for 1 of 3 different track events. There are 5 courses holding Grand Prix events in the US, but were these contests ever offered outside of Europe?

Yes, seems regional and note the two stickers available on ebay are both from Germany.

(1988) When the Samurai X3.0 won the "Camera of the Year" award, Yashica decided to produce a commemorative version -- of sorts. It's the same thing as the original but it has a gold shutter release, a gold lens cap and the words "GRAND PRIX 88" in gold on the hang grip. Hard to find.
