This arrived today in a box of goodies and the only explanation I can think of is that it's a fancy lanyard designed for an identity badge. Contax N Delegate lanyard? So, I would guess it was intended either for journalists invited to the launch of the Contax N-system, or it was for Kyocera employees or delegates to a photographic trade show. Either way, I have no explanation for that strange, black soft plastic ring with the tab which appears to be a patented design.... I may eventually break it free from its sealed wrapping and perhaps all will become clear...

Just a wild guess, but I've attended a lot of trade shows through the years and not every venue that hosts these shows has the exact same type of badges. Some had a simple card-stock card with a tiny hole for a ribbon or string - at the lowest cost for small shows - while others had laminated badges and swivel clasps on them that alternately popped off to give a snap attachment for a more elaborate neck band. Seems that this might be intended for a presenter that would attend multiple shows for the introduction of the N series, and have most/all of the possible attachment types already present on the lanyard.
Not that there wasn't a fair amount of prestige in Contax ephemera, but the expense to give out high-end lanyards to every single patron who attended might have been a bit much and too costly. If I were to dig through all my old boxes, I might find a badge and lanyard or two that I tossed in without thinking too hard about it, but it wasn't something I imagined keeping as a momento at the time. These might have been purchased in small numbers and reserved for dealers or wholesale reps for continued use over the course of a short season of shows.
