A gentleman at the coffee house saw me carrying my Canon FT and ventured that he might want to buy and learn to use a camera of that vintage. He was willing to get the camera serviced, but from mentions I see around the forums, I gather that a Yashica SLR might just work right away.

The light seals and foam mirror bumper would almost certainly need to be changed, this would be true of any Japanese camera from that era. But there are plenty of working examples of the Yashica "J" series cameras around, as well as the "TL" cameras. And M42 lenses are good and plentiful.

Out of sentiment, I bought a Yashica TL Electro X SLR (to match the shutter regulated by electromagnet of my Electro 35 GSN rangefinder).
Sure enough, the slow shutter speeds are obviously accurate. But the film counter is balky, the foam seals and bumpers are sticky, the meter overexposes by 4/3 of a stop, and the Yashinon DS 50mm f/1.7 lens has a scale that reads 10m when focused at a distance.
Oh well, I will probably put it aside due to a shutter latching, and resulting mirror cycle, problem.
