Today a Contax AX landed with a Yashica ML 70-210mm f4.5 all the way from Japan. Yashica ML 70-210 f4.5Popping the lens onto a full-frame Canon, I was surprised at the image quality throughout its focal range; I had completely forgotten just how good this little lens is. When you consider the 3 ML options for mid-range zooms, this lens seems to be overlooked. The choices are 70-210 f4, 80-200 f4 and this 70-210 f4.5; they weigh 1042g, 626g and 560g respectively. While the 70-210 f4 is in a league of its own, the image quality of this little gem is not that far behind. The fact that it is smaller and lighter than the ubiquitous 80-200 f4, given the closeness of the maximum aperture and the extra 20mm in focal range, came as a surprise. It is also worth noting that the lens offers some nice close focusing using its 'macro' facility. All in all, this is a very fine performer and deserves greater recognition. Get 'em while they're still cheap!
