I just ran across a Yashica Quick-Lite on EBAY, and it made me wonder if there is a list somewhere of Yashicas (and Contax???) flash units with at least some specs.

In terms of creating a list of Yashica- and Contax- branded flash units, a useful starting point might be found on our Accessories p2 where we have a thread on trigger voltages. It lists many of the Yashica flashes plus the Contax ones; it was created solely to help people decide whether they can safely use them directly on the hot shoes of modern DSLRs or similar mirrorless models as some old flash guns, like many of the very popular Vivitar units, would fry their circuitry. If we take that list as a starting point, which criteria would you like to see included: GN, recycling times, batteries/AC power. tilt/swivel heads, secondary flashes, bulb types & capacitors (in older units) etc.?

I did a quick/shallow web search and it appears that there currently is no comprehensive list of the Yashica or the Contax offerings -- let alone together. Wiki has a short list of Contax flashes, but my guess is that they were all made by "Yashica". Some Contax on-line literature has flash details, but again, my guess is that they were all made by "Yashica" -- regardless of how they were labeled. For example, one Contax brochure shows the CS-10. I have one labeled YASHICA, but perhaps they were also sold with the CONTAX name. Info on older gear seems non-existent. I would think a flash table should include the label (ex. YASHICA CS-10), manufacturer (YASHICA OR CONTAX), type (bulb, flash), power (2AA, AC), connection (cols, hot, PC, slave). Sounds like a lot of work. I know -- here is my incomplete Minolta flash list: www.subclub.org/minman/flashes.htm

I will try to develop a list of Contax and Yashica flashes but we will have problems with detailing some of the earlier Yashica units as, for example, GNs were not always specified. The Contax range was developed quite separately from Yashica's and their most powerful units (RTF540 and TLA480) were undoubtedly made by National (check the National PE-480SG against the Contax TLA480). I would be most interested to know which Contax brochure shows a CS-10 as it was only ever sold as a Yashica product. I can't find any European brochure for post-1975 Contax models that shows the CS-10 on a Contax, though I have yet to locate two of my 137MD brochures.

Here's where I saw it: www.pacificrimcamera.com/rl/00809/00809.pdfThe main page says CONTAX REAL TIME FLASH, and t shows it as for the Contax cameras -- but the top of the page says YASHICA. So you are right -- this brochures just shoes Contax cameras (and Yashica cameras) with Contax and Yashica flashes. FYI, I just posted a link to a new EBAY listing for a nice ME1 with a CS-10 in the BUY/SELL section. Looks nice, but not for me!

That's a great table. I'll keep my eye open for any additional info. Thank you for that. As I come across any working items that are either absent from our list or are in it but lacking some information, I'll try to get hold of them and keep updating. Looking back at the trigger voltages, I still find it incredible that the capacitor in the tiny CS-14 can create over 250v from just two 1.5v AA batteries...

I nabbed one. It's a small fish, but those are the ones I like. It's a Yashica MG-Lite. Obviously designed for the Yashica MG-1 camera, but looks like it might like my Minolta MG-s. Has hot shoe -- no PC connection. Looks like GN 44 in feet with ISO 100. Table on back. Test button & ready light. Manual exposure only. Probably TWO AA.

I saw that one as well. There was a much less-expensive pair a few days ago, bit I'm only interested in the flash, and the current flash-only auction is over-priced in my mind.
For some reason most sellers of really small -- manual only, of course -- flashes think that their item is worth more than gold. There an auction right now for a Yashica CS-14 that's about the same price as the numerous Contax TLA 140 flashes. Go figure!
Fortunately, I'm in not rush. I just nabbed a CS-14 and Sunpak 101 -- together -- for only $5!!! I'm still surprised. They haven't arrived yet, but even if only one works, it's a good deal.

I still find it incredible that the capacitor in the tiny CS-14 can create over 250v from just two 1.5v AA batteries... Just being pedantic here, but the capacitor doesn't do anything other than store the charge. The voltage is generated by a step-up transformer driven by an oscillator - that's what causes the whistling noise you hear.

On many flashes, such as the Vivitar 283, the whistling noice is very apparent, yet on other flashes, such as the Minolta 2500D, I don't hear it at all. In the "old days" I used the whistling sound to confirm that the flash was turned ON, that the batteries were good, and that there was a good connection. With newer flashes, I have to just sit and hope! Do newer flashes have silent oscillators?
