I came accross an open source and cross platform software that allows anyone to design/review optical diagrams and thought I'd pass on the find for anyone who my be interested in trying it out. It's based on the Java runtime environment, so it will work on Windows, MAC, or even Linux. I'm not associated with the author, but the alternative commercial programs start at $3K per user seat, so the zero cost price is certainly right! Thanks a lot, Randy! It's not strictly in my line, but I know a couple folks who might be very interested in this.

I've always found the nuts-n-bolts of a subject I'm interested in to be worth a little investigation to better understand it as a whole. If nothing else, it offers an insight into how incredibly difficult it is for optical engineers to juggle a mountain of variables, toss in a load of chemistry and geometry and physics - just to try to gain an image that's even 1/10th as good as the one captured by the human eye. As a visual person, it makes me appreciate those two little orbs even more.

And imagine all that in the times when no computers nor automation where in place, not even a calculator, and everything was done by hand. Simply amazing. I can confirm that the software runs okay in Linux using the portable java executable file and the command described in "Downloads" section, just make sure you have the jre (java runtime environment) package already installed (it can be obtained from the official repositories of your Linux distribution).

Thanks for confirming on linux Ariel ... that reminds me that I need to update a couple of VM's. Speaking of what did or didn't get used in the past. In 1888 this was what was used to calculate exposures, and take note that it even makes use of one's specific geographic latitude location and the calendar! It wasn't only the optical engineers who had a few complications to deal with, just to get things right.

Obviously, previous generations were having a lot more patience than us. xD

Another round of optical design software, with several of them as free zero-cost options. There are links to other related stuff too, like an optical glass database, and a materials editor to work on various glass components used in the other software... and an Android based lens calculator... www.opticalsoftware.net/Another full optical designer (free trial, but low cost purchase), with a sampler to mimic a resulting photo taken using the as-designed lens! www.skyscientific.com/dboptic-optical-design-softwareAnother pair of free designer softwares: www.stellarsoftware.com/ -and- www.caxcad.com/A free vector graphics software diagramming tool, that just creates 2D diagrams, and doesn't do any optical analysis or calculations... www.edrawsoft.com/optics-diagram.htmlA cloud-based set of design apps you can run inside your web browser... lightmachinery.com/optical-design-center/[ NOTE: Please do your due diligence on checking software to ensure it's safe for your own use. ]
