I just got this FED-2 back from Peter's Camera Repair with a certificate of shutter speeds. It's one half stop slow but still mostly within specifications. (Peter is not busy and seems equipped for Rolleiflex and Leica.) Peter used a slide rule to convert from milliseconds to shutter speeds for me. I ordered this with a CLA by Synoptics Camera in Kharkiv. But the curtain tensions were too high, as described at the Range Finder Forum in the FSU section. Using my old television as a tester, I reduced the curtain tensions. Then I could see that there were glitches in the movement of the trailing curtain. I exercised the shutter until the glitches were reduced, but then I saw that the shutter speeds had seemed to slow to almost half speed. I shot a roll of film this winter exposing on that premise, but the negatives seemed underexposed by half a stop. And now Peter's measurements agree. The sample picture from the FED-2 is by FUJIFILM 200 and scanned by MEIJER. Attachments:

At least nothing is wrong with the lens, but better scans would improve on that. Is your camera a 2C or 2D?

This is a FED-2 D type with the woven nylon covering and no strap lugs.
I decided not to be tempted by other lens designs or focal lengths. The Tessar type satisfies me. I did not even order a collapsible lens. But I did order a fine leather case for it.
Even when my refurbished Yashica arrives, this FED will still compete for film. It is a different style of shooting from the Electro 35, exposing by either estimating the light, or by using my Walz selenium light meter (with calibrated marks on blue tape) and a gray card.

I've got a friend who's sending me a Fed 2, but I'm not sure which model it is. It's got a loose shutter curtain which I hope just needs re-gluing. Don't know if it's coming with a lens either, but I've got the I-22 from the Zorki 1D, and an I-26M I ordered so I didn't have to use clamp on filters. I did shoot a roll with the I-26M in the Zorki a while back, and I really like the look it gives.

It's interesting how these low energy and efficient systems can reward careful craft.

The FED-2 came in yesterday, and it's a D model. Whatever you do, don't try putting an I-22 lens on it. The focus lever will drag the covering, and there is no clearance to get it off of infinity. Use the I-10 if you want a collapsible lens. The I-26M fits nicely, as this camera was designed to use it.
One of the shutter curtains was cut out of the camera with a razor knife, and I'm afraid the previous owner may have damaged the drum when he did that. I'll have to tear it down to see if it's still fixable. He also informed me that he couldn't tighten up the one curtain spool, so I'm afraid he may have broken the spring. If that's the case, I don't know if I want to waste my only spare set of curtains on it.

What an interesting warning that is! I easily could have tried an I-22 lens. And it is also interesting that you might proceed with the project. I put aside a Lubitel when I saw that the rear lens element was retained by a spring clip.

Oh! I guess that would be a surprise.
