In trying to find a suitable battery replacement for the 2 mercury PX640 1.3v batteries in a Lynx 14E, I found that a single 1.5v CR1 (a.k.a., CR1/3N, DL1/3N, or 2L76) comes close to the voltage, and is slightly smaller in diameter than one of the 640's - but it's the same length. Using some bits of plastic solves the difference in diameter, and a 1/4-20 domed nut is a perfect conductive stand-in for battery #2's length and diameter. The meter will light, but it will not change the calculated exposure. The 14E uses the over/under LED's like the typical Electro 35, so there's no way of knowing if it's varying the readings at all. It's stuck on 'Under', and won't budge or even flicker.
I have some diodes that can compensate for the voltage and current draw to match the battery to the 640's values, but before I start rigging up a full-on adapter, does anyone else have a 14E that they've managed to get its meter working, and tell me what they've come up with?
One last note. These single CR1 batteries are equivalent to 2 LR44 or SR44 stacks like you'll find in an FX-D. The battery fits snuggly into the camera's carrier/cap, and it works as expected. I don't know how long they'll keep going as replacements, but the CR1's are readily available, and cost-wise they're about the same as 1 CR1 vs 2 L/SR44 batteries. Also, they are lithium cells and not alkaline or silver oxide, so I'm hoping the voltage won't drop as fast over time.

I had the same problem with mine, but used a different battery (357 oxide). Still only read under, so I figured it was an issue with the wipers inside the lens barrel. Never did tear it down again, though I'll need to because I didn't get the shutter cleaned good enough, and it started sticking again. flic.kr/s/aHsjz8CrmKPF

Thanks PF... Your thoughts on the problem led me to a how-to guide on accessing and fixing the wipers. It seems like this might have been a common occurrence with the 14E. I won't know for sure if it will lead to an actual fix in my case, but the good news is that everything else is working well, so at the very least I can use a hand-held meter and shoot it as-is. Here's the link to the how-to page... feuerbacher.net/photo/repair/YashicaLynx14E/YashicaLynx14E.html
