Hi everyone, so basically I bought a used Contax 139 and it was working fine until I tried to change the film. It worked for like two shots but now the film drive coupling doesn't go back in place anymore. I noticed it works manually with a small pressure tho, any ideas on how i could solve the issue? Here a demonstration: imgur.com/a/36CW4K2

I read the manual but my camera issue is not mentioned in there. Can anyone help me?

What you're spinning on the base of the camera is the coupler for attaching the optional battery powered winder. The winder and thumb lever functionalities are independent of each other. Think of it like the pedals on a bicycle and you stop pedaling and coast, and the other drive gears keeps spinning.
Disregard what that coupler does when using the thumb lever to manually advance the film. I'm away from home and can't check my own 139 to verify it, on whether the coupler should spin or not when using the lever, but I don't think it should have any effect on actually advancing the film.

What I've noticed is that the coupler should return in position to allow the shutter to be functional but in this case it's just jammed and i have to return it manually.

Perhaps another member here can provide some verification on the 139's functionality when the coupler rotates. For now I can only point you to the 139 repair manual - not the user manual - on how the film advance subsystem works. You'll need to physically trace it according to what's on page 7, here: cdn.yashicaforum.net/wl/?id=6VUJRGuaJOBLPNsdku2V6rjvR7AVrYqQ

The coupler has to go back to it's home position for the camera to be released as there is a switch that gets set from it that enables the shutter release. Your problem is the ratchet assembly under the base plate that allows the advance lever to be used in multiple short strokes instead of one long one. The ratchet assembly needs some cleaner on it then some light oil to get it moving again. It's a common problem.

Why did not I think of that? Thank you a lot tho!
