I spotted this today; it's only the second time I've seen it: a hybrid, rubber grip for the Contax 137MA. 137MA unusual grip It is much less obtrusive than the Contax 137 Grip Adapter although the adapter has the benefit of the wrist strap. The front grip is matched at the rear with a thumb grip which stands proud of the right-hand end of the back-plate. Whether a left-handed version was made is unknown to me.

I does look nice, although I'm guessing it's an aftermarket item. Speaking of the 137 MA/MD hand grip, it's a required add-on to get either of the 137 models fitted to the Contax TLA 540 flash. The camera's threaded tripod hole is in the wrong spot to match up with any positions available on the 540's baseplate, Using the grip moves the tripod socket into a suitable spot to mate with the flash's attachment screw, with the added benefit of the grip surface and a more balanced feel and fit for regular tripod use.

It's an important point! I recall buying the 137MD when it appeared, as a back-up to my RTS back-up... The guys at Photax (UK Distributor) ensured I had the new TLA Adapter with the screw-in connector to the camera plus the little PC-adapter cord for continued use with the old RTS/FR-series models BUT failed to mention that the camera needed the Grip Adapter as you mention. It was a couple of months before those grips arrived in the UK but thankfully, due to the inbuilt motor-drive, with a little manual dexterity, it was possible to use the RTF540 with the 137 and the bracket was thus superfluous. I had the RTF540 Power Pack on a belt and provided one remembered to leave it a little loose, the grip of the flash tucked in to the belt nicely when not being used. For reasons of convenience, on the rare occasions when the 137 was the camera of choice, it tended to be paired with the TLA30 which was still powerful enough for most normal work. The only negative about those 137 Grip Adapters is that all bought in the last 3-4 years have suffered the usual cracked leatherette on the wrist-strap - that also applies to the 137 Power Adapter cases. I don't have the skills, equipment or patience to make some new ones from leather but I am going to try a combination of PVC plastic and a felt lining as I reckon it should be possible to stitch them together. All that is then needed is a die with the correct CONTAX font and some pressure - well, that's the theory...
