I am embarrassed to have taken so long to figure this out. The usual flat panel computer display completely misrepresents the gamma and contrast level of a photograph in digital form. Calibration with a ColorHug seems not to correctly remedy this bad gamma. And tilting the display to set the apparent gamma correctly might distort the dark tones.
Stand by while I acquire computers and displays with IPS technology, and completely rethink my aesthetics based on a better gamma calibration.

I've been seriously considering continuing to use my old computer set-up when doing photo work, then transferring the finished product to the new system. It might mean rearranging my desk set-up (which could involve half the apartment), but would be worth the hassle and extra workflow steps if the output looks better.

This new Acer monitor with IPS technology definitely outclasses my older LG TV/monitor. It passes all of the online tests out of the box with no calibration done.

Well, the Acer monitor does have a green tint in the highlights. And I am having trouble getting calibrations from the ColorHug.

I recently bough an HP Pavilion 27xi, and its color rendition is superb.

It's odd. The green tint only shows on black and white documents, not on color.

Perhaps that is a feature, and not a bug. Green tint on docs to relieve eye strain?

The green tint on the Acer monitor extends to black and white images also, such as some of the highlighting on this site. And pure white is not tinted.
On this 11.6" Toshiba notebook with a ColorHug calibration, this same highlighting seems slightly magenta compared to the white.
