After breaking my copy of this lens last year, I have been waiting a long time to find this replacement... This is the Tamron SP 350mm f5.6 Tele Macro lens which, along with Yashica's ML 500mm f8, is one of the most sought-after mirror lenses out there. Tamron SP 350mm f5.6Here it is paired with a Contax RX and I can't help thinking that they make a very handsome couple. This short lens has earned its reputation for sharpness and good contrast (especially when using the reversible hood provided); sadly, its selling price reflects this too. But if you can find one that's affordable, grab it - you certainly won't be disappointed. One of the most useful aspects of this lens is that it can focus as close as 43 inches ( 1.1m), and in so doing, provides a macro ratio of 1:2.5 which is very handy. As with all good mirror lenses, it can focus a little beyond the infinity mark to allow for heat expansion. If you use this lens on a digital camera, you should enable focus peaking to help with accurate focusing; this is a mirror lens that can be used hand-held with no difficulty.

Is it as expensive as the strangely-priced MINOLTA 5.6/350?

Is it as expensive as the strangely-priced MINOLTA 5.6/350? Hello Matthias I am not familiar with a Minolta 350mm f5.6; I know their 300mm f5.6 which is a conventional telephoto but they do have the much sought-after 250mm f5.6. That lens when it was introduced was cheaper than Minolta's conventional 200mm f4 lens and not a great success because of its slowness and softness when compared with 200mm and 300mm non-mirror lenses. And it's out-of-focus highlights, as with most mirror lenses, can be an acquired taste! Today, they can sell for up to 1000 Euros although 650-700 is more common; their principal attraction is their compactness. The Tamron SP 350mm f5.6 sells typically for anywhere between 140-300 Euros depending on their condition and whether they are complete with case and all filters. That being said, one sold here in the UK for only £50 a few days ago... The Tamron 350mm is sharper than the Minolta 250mm and of course has a slightly longer reach. Tamron's much misunderstood SP 300 f5.6 is a much better lens than the mirror and can be bought for well under 100 Euros. But you are paying the extra with those mirror lenses for their small size...
