Last year absente brought a Yashica J-mini to our attention as it was marked Yashica mini King Kong and there's no information out there on that uber-rare version of the J-mini. Leaving that exceptional model to one side, the J-mini came in 3 accepted versions: J-mini, J-mini date-back and the J-mini Super. Below are images of the J-mini with date-back and the J-mini Super; they look very similar but in fact the latter has a more compact body. Yashica J-miniYashica J-mini SuperThey both sport Yashica's very pleasing 32mm f3.5 lens which comprises 4 glass elements in 3 groups with good, effective coatings. This is quite a wide lens for a fairly basic, automatic P&S camera. The J-mini has a front switch for use when close focus is required and the rewind button, for when you don't wish to wait for the end of the roll, is on the base as with many Yashica models. On the slightly more compact Super, all controls have been moved to buttons on the top plate, with a larger LCD to remind you of the various functions in use as well as the film count. The Super is stamped with 'Made in Hong Kong' but the J-mini has no country of origin marked on it. The date-back uses a separate CR2025 battery, not taking its power from the main battery as with some of the larger cameras. Both cameras use 2 AA cells for their power. These delightful little cameras sit very comfortably in the hand although it is very easy to cover part of the flash with the index finger of your left hand...

I think I have the J-mini, but not the Super. Or maybe it's the other way around. Would have to search a bit to be sure.

PF The good thing is that both models can produce equally pleasant images, so it matters little which one you own. The only issue with the photos is that they all show minor signs of vignetting so, when you compose a shot, you need to mentally crop for the corners of the image.
