It's very rare these days to come across a mint example of this venerable, old wide-angle lens and I'm looking forward to seeing just what it will do. The Auto Yashinon-DX 35mm f2.8 was highly thought of back in the early to mid 1970s and its build quality is exemplary. To find it complete with case, caps and a Yashica UV filter has been a real bonus. Auto Yash-DX 35 f2.8I've yet to read a disappointing review of this lens so can't wait to try it...

So what do you think of it?

So what do you think of it? It's lovely and sharp but needs a good hood as it doesn't handle flare too well under extremes of lighting. That being said, it's no worse than any of its contemporaries and when I'm out shooting with an old m42 body, it's often on the camera and if not, it's in the bag. When used on a digital camera, chroma can be an issue though post-production will sort it.

No. As the use of the term 'AUTO' implies, the aperture automatically operates at the setting the photographer has chosen when the shutter is activated but remains fully open at other times. However, it does have a switch that allows you to select manual or automatic operation.

True ... that AUTO was not in my focus while reading / looking at the pic From what I have seen on-line and my 2 types, there were in DX 35 different construction and is a confusion to me; - pre-set (aka rebranded yashinon-r) - straith barrel outside (plastic?) housing with long vertical grip stripes, in black or/and silver - metal housing takumar look-a-like - metal housing looks same as DS but different rubber grip

alexxAny kind of proof to back up your findings? Nothing bad meant. My 35/2.8 DX looks exactly like the one from Biggles, all black. Good Evening.

I own one of these for many years, and another one (NOS) soon. It's being single coated, so it does have (like all single coated lenses from a specific timeframe) flare issues. It's bokeh is better than the ML, so i'd say this is some kind of "art" or "artistic" rendering style lens, for matching subjects. Of course, the ML is sharper, and 2 generations at least newer. From the design, personally i dislike Yashica DS(M) lenses, they look ugly for my aesthetic feeling.
