Manual focus with electronics, I presume.
My New FD 28 mm is not as sharp as my other lens, I like using it though.

Do I spot the near-mythical original and intact Contax/Yashica covering on that example, Michael? I have an FX 103 Program that still has a mostly intact covering, but not near as nice as yours appears to be.

I can't tell about your FX 103P, Mike, but this covering is a 'rubberette' rather than a leatherette and obviously less prone to disintegrating the way other Kyocera leatherettes do. Looks to me as if it was the same material they used on the RTS III. Michael

Hello Michael,
Probably THE classic Contax workhorse camera - and sadly undervalued these days. I have a few of them, all with a D-7, and they never miss a beat. I always add a P-5 when working outdoors as the use of AA rather than AAA batteries does offer up to a 40% increase in shots. My only regret is that I never owned one of the very late models that had the grey finish which looked rather elegant - but at the end of the day, a 167 is a 167 is a 167...

Hi Michael, I forgot to mention some extra fun I have with a couple of my 167s - an upgrade...
Check out the piccies: firstly, a conventional 167 attached to a nice little Yashica macro gem - or is it? In the second piccie, spot the ceramic plate...

Help me please, Biggles, I don't get it... Michael Hi Michael,
There are a few items of Contax gear that can be used to improve the performance of a model for which they were never intended, the classic being using the W-7 winder on the 139.
The 167MT is a lovely camera though it uses the standard Contax pressure plate on the camera back; Contax used a much smoother and more accurately machined ceramic plate to meet the exacting standards of the RTSIII, with a vacuum to 'suck the film onto the plate for maximum flatness'. They also realised that where money was not an issue, even without the vacuum in the RTSIII, the ceramic pressure plate was a better performer than their usual pressed metal type so they created the Contax ST with a ceramic plate, among many other enhancements. What a lot of people still don't know is that the back-plates of the ST and 167MT have identical dimensions and locking systems. So, when I use a 167MT for very accurate macro work, I always use one with a ST back-plate fitted and bought a few spare ST backs a few years ago for the purpose; if ever one gets damaged, they can't be easily replaced so having a couple of spares is a good idea.
And of course, the opposite is true so I often remove the ceramic back-plate on the ST when shooting remotely (usually for wildlife work) and attach the 167MT's D-7 DataBack so I can use its excellent intervalometer on the ST. Contax/Yashica gear is often full of nice surprises if you know what to look for!

Thanks for enlightening me, Graham. I did know about the vacuum pressure plate in the RTSIII though because I own one--in fact, it was my very first Contax--but I hardly use it these days as I find it rather unwieldy and 'over-orchestrated', in a manner of speaking...

It's a mystery to me; it's not referred to in the text. It reminds me of a security tag used in some shops.
Foto-Sandor is pretty good at answering questions so you could simply ask for an explanation...

Yet another "Just wondering". It seems like a good deal -- camera and battery holder -- but it's not for me. What is the battery holder in this auction? I assume it takes AA batteries (?) -- and slides into the bottom, motor drive part?

Hello xkaes,
It makes using the 167MT for long sessions easier.
The 167 takes AAA batteries but that P-5 battery holder uses AA cells which are more durable when shooting a lot of photos. Furthermore, when taking piccies in extreme cold, there is a P-6 External Power Pack which can attach to the P-5 Battery Holder (and the P-7 for the Contax ST); this allows you to keep the batteries inside the warmth of your clothing and so prevent the power drain you get in very cold conditions. Contax were superb at providing cold-weather options for powering their pro-spec cameras in the pre-lithium days. Yashica's FR series was able to use the external battery holder designed for the Contax RTS but Contax's consumer-oriented cameras such as the 139 and 159 didn't have such options and nor did any of the Yashica models that followed the FR-series.
The one non-pro spec camera from Contax that did provide an external power option was the Aria which used the Contax G-series external power adapter.

I would love to get a ceramic backplate for my ST, but i've never spotted these things into the wild, Graham. Otherwise, i've paid 1/3 of the price, this Contax ST usually into that condition sells for, fully working, and mint.
@michael
Your Handgrip seems somewhat being beaten, and there lies the problem - that point, which is being slightly dented inside, that Grip wasn't perfectly being thought, and well-designed.
My 167mt looks better, but also at the same point, being a bit shifted, dented inside the plastic mold. I do prefer more my FR1, which doesn't have a Grip, but the faux Leather is way more robust on the FR/FR-I/FR-II Series, than onto the Contax RTS, and RTS II SLRs. Last, but not least...all mentioned SLRs do have a Film Advance Lever, which is being preferred.
