The final piece of the YK/YL series has arrived: the YL with the faster lens. But therein lies a problem.... YL with f1.8 lensThis is the premium version of the YL, advertised in the US as the YL1; the standard version with the 4.5cm f2.8 lens is shown in ads as the YL2. What is strange is that the literature refers to this version having a 4.5cm f1.9 lens but this camera clearly shows that it is carrying the f1.8 Yashinon. It is an unusual error - was it planned to use a f1.9 but they decided to go with an existing fast Yashinon, such as was later seen on the Minimatic-S? An unusual anomaly...

I've seen plenty of obvious errors in manufacturer literature. One possibility is that the manufacturing arm of the company makes a change either before or without bothering/remembering to tell the literature production people (which is likely to be a completely different company). This can lead to a lot of confusion -- with some people thinking they have a RARE jem when, in fact, all they have is a typo.

I managed to find an explanation of the YL cameras and their numbering and lens variations at yashicatlr.com's invaluable website. There were f1.9 Yashinon lenses on some of the YL1 bodies and two versions of the f1.8 lenses. I also managed to confirm that my camera was manufactured in August 1959. At 61 years of age, it's still in near mint condition - that's impressive engineering.
