In order to get a jump start on making one or modifing something else, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows if the take-up spools on the earlier Nicca models or the Yashica YE bodies were the same as those from the YF. I have come across a lot of references - including the excellent pics from ridgeblue99 on Flickr and elsewhere - so I've got a lot of the basics already, but if any of the other models do end up matching (or at least being close enough), then it will probably be a lot easier to get another body that already has a spool that works... and use that one as a template for a suitable replacement. With the skyrocketing prices on Leica M bodies, my wallet says the YF might be as close as I'll get to one unless I do a major sell-off of gear, and that's not an appealing idea at all. After a few test shots on digital of the Yashinon 5cm LTM, I'm anxious to shoot some B&W on the YF before winter takes over. I've ordered a collapsable Fed II spool from Alex Photo (Ukraine) to use as a possible starting point to get a quick stand-in if all else fails.

I'm also toying with the idea of having someone make the brass or aluminum parts for me (based on whatever CAD files I provide), and assembling them myself. I'm leaning towards brass - whether I make the parts or someone else does - since I'd trust soldered construction to be a lot longer lasting and more robust than glued or 3D printed plastic, and cheaper than having them done as CNC prototype parts. I'm certainly 'handy' enough to do the work, but this isn't my area of expertise, so if anyone has a background in metal fabrication, by all means... let me know if I'm going down a deep hole I shouldn't be in.

Well, I can at least answer one of my own questions... A Nicca Type-3f spool will not fit the YF. A Nicca body with it's appropriately fitting spool arrived today, and the first thing to get checked was the possiblity of sharing a spool between them - at least for the time being. Sadly the 'nub' for the advance in the YF is larger than the hole in the Nicca's spool.
I'm still waiting on the Fed II spool to arrive, but I've already checked some spools I have handy (Exakta and Kiev), and they don't match. I still have to locate the Zeiss and spare Leica LTM spools I tucked away awhile back so I can test them too.

With many thanks to ridgeblue99 for his generosity, there's now a snug-fitting and proper spool in the YF. There's been a nasty cold snap here lately, but better weather awaits in the next few days and I can try a roll or two. I'm still planning on trying to rework the Fed 2 spool - if/when it ever leaves Ukraine's Customs to get here - and/or have some parts made to assemble into some spares now that there's a good spool to match to. I'll update as the adventure continues.

With a roll of Kodak 400 shot in the YF and on the way to processing, the Fed 2 spool arrived today for comparison. With a bit of retrofitting it looks like it can become a substitute with the right size of brass shim stock to fill in the hole at the slip-on end. It's plentiful and really cheap, and can be stacked to an almost infinite amount of thicknesses to make a custom sized tube. For posterity - and if anyone finds a need to do this for themselves...
| Nicca | Fed 2 | Shaft ID
| 10.5mm
| 11.25mm | Shaft OD
| 12.15mm
| 13.00mm | End cap Diam. | 22.5mm
| 22.25mm | Cap to cap - outside
| 36.75mm
| 37.00mm | Pin hole Diam. | 4.00mm
| 8.00mm
|
If there's anything that will be tricky, it's the sliding center post that fits over the centering pin on the base plate. The pin hole is half the size on the YF, but the height of the knurled knob that sticks out is quite different between the two spools. The YF's is 4.5mm, and the Fed 2's is only 2.5mm, so cut and soldered brass tubing should create a slip-in sizing adapter. Pics to come for both spools before I start.
