That DX is surely a rare lens, I came more often to a super yashi-r 100 (preset) than a dx 100 one. However, my experience with 'exceptional' or 'highly regarded'... lenses is not so good: they seem to be often just OK and nothing more. I have here few of different in 100 (canon, fuji, meyer ..) and Im not sure why are they so overly exceptional. It could be just my taste. Im for sure not all about the sharpness. At one time, I had pretty much the same take on a 35mm as a wide angle on full frame with film. When I initially got my new FR I, I'd ordered 3 lenses with it (ML 35 2.8, ML 50 1.4, and a 135 2.8) and I found myself wishing the 35 was wider. It wasn't that the lens was bad or it wasn't sharp or had issues, it was just that most times I couldn't get all I wanted in the frame, and I couldn't 'frame with my feet' 'cause I ran out of room!. That soured me on using it and I later got a 28mm to use for wide shots, and the 35 sat on a shelf. It's years later, and I still instinctively hesitate to use a 35mm, but I can use a 40mm and not flinch? I think we all might have something ingrained in whatever 'style' we've created for ourselves, that keeps us from using something. Whether it's a bokeh pattern or it's roughness or 'swirly-ness' or smoothness, a particular focal length, a compact version versus the larger size... things sneak in and it's hard to understand our own choices at the time, but we make them just the same. The good thing is that there are multiple tools, and some elevate above their hardware rivals by a notch or two and sit in a favored position in the kit bag. And, for the record, the ML 35 is an exceptional lens, but it took me some time and distance from it to appreciate it better.
