Hello. I bought a Contax RX camera from a japanese seller on ebay. When it arrived I was really excited and mounted a lens as soon as possilble. To my surprise I didn't see a rectangular image in the viewfinder but a circle one (the rest is blacked out). Upon further inspection I noticed that it doesn't have a focusing screen (which was not stated in a description). It was such a bummer... I don't really want to return the camera because I also had to pay customs and this money will not be returned to me, what's more I really want to have a RX and they are really hard to get in my country... I started to look for focusing screens online and noticed that the focusing screens for RXs are quite pricy, and here's my question - is it possible to use a focusing screen dedicated for a different contax camera (for example RTSIII, the FV type) on the RX? Or are they not compatible at all?

Hello, electra ... Welcome to the forum! I think there are 3 or 4 different focus screen types for the Contax bodies that have user replacable sets. I'll cal them 'sets', since they should include the screen, the case, and the tool to hold it when you remove/replace them. Unless you have the specific tool already, then I'd recommend you get one to use... it's a pain without the right one. The "FW" types are suitable for the ST, RX, and the AX. Check the manual ( download this one) to see which screen variation(s) you want out of the ones available. You might get lucky sometimes with either Roberts Camera, or KEH having them from time to time, or there's always the parts-only body route to get a donor - but that can sometimes be pricier than just getting a replacement set.

I would ask the seller for a partial refund to cover the cost of the screen. I've had similar problems buying from Japan and have managed to come to a compromise with the sellers.

I have one extra FW-4 focusing screen just in case you are interested. Just let me know.
