Temptation won out, and I grabbed another J-3. I didn't notice a wee small bit in the ad's images, and was surprised to find a little something extra when I unwrapped it. Covering the meter window opening was a soft plastic cap, on a short snake-chain. The cap is exactly the right size, and it stays in place just fine. The chain is chromed brass, and not steel, so it seems like it was made to be used with camera gear. I've looked through 2 manuals - both a bit different - and there is nothing shown or mentioned about a meter cap. There's nothing listed in anything Yashica-ish I have to suggest it was an available option, or even that it came with every new J-3, in much the same way that you'd get a plastic plug for a PC sync connection or an electronic cable release hole on a Contax or C/Y Yashica body. Anyone ever see one before? Is it a 3rd party add-on, or is it from a totally different camera, or something entirely unrelated?

Does the J-3 have a switch for the meter, or does it stay on all the time? Looks like someone has fashioned a way to save on battery life.

PF There's no switch anywhere on the body, and nothing in the manual about one. The original battery specified is a 1.3v Mercury cell... Mallory RM:1, or General RG-1. It states that the normal life expectancy for full power is about 2 years. That last bit on it's lifetime got me thinking that the cap was just a shipping cover, if it actually was supplied by Yashica, since it would have made little sense to use it as a basic on/off switch. The odd part is how well it fits, and that it has an eyelet for tethering. Even if it isn't 'official', I'll probably leave it attached.

BTW... I used a 1.5v LR44 with a #9 O-Ring to get a suitable replacement that seats into the cavity instead of the 1.3v... and the meter works fine and matches my Seconic and my DigiSix within 1/3 of a stop.
