Hi all, I just found this forum as I've been looking for info on a lens I recently picked up. The one thing I've been able to find out about it is that it seems to be pretty rare, but that's about it! Does anyone have knowledge to share about this lens? Here's what I know: - Markings on the name ring are "Super Yashinon-R 1:4 f=25cm Yashica Japan K.C. No. 2500540"
- It uses a mount I wasn't familiar with -- seems to be the Pentamatic mount (?)
- Really cool 18-blade aperture with clicked and declicked rings
Any thoughts on what this is (when it was made, how many, whether anyone has used it, etc.)?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum, Nathan. That truly is a rare lens. I think I've only seen one other for sale before. And that would be the Pentamatic bayonet mount, which was discontinued in favor of the Universal Thread Mount, M42. You might find some info by perusing this sub-forum Lenses. And I'm sure one of our resident collectors/researchers of all things Yashica will chime in later on. This site shows the likely even more rare hood that goes with the lens: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/yashica-super-yashinon-250mm-25cm-f4-1878120808Good to have you on board. PF

I kinda happened upon it & am certainly no Yashica expert, so I appreciate the info! And in fact, mine did come with the hood; it doesn't have any markings but the style and fit seem to indicate it's original to the lens.

Nice that it came with the hood, Nathan. I just spent a year trying to get the hood for a Sigma 170-500mm APO because for that series of lenses they never bothered to mark the hoods.

Since I'm not a collector, I think I'll pass this lens on to someone who will really appreciate it. I'll work on taking some photos so I can list it on eBay. Since it's rare, though, I don't know how to price it -- any suggestions? I've sold a lot of "commodity" camera items over the years, but this one's rather unique and therefore tricky for me. Any thoughts from the community?
Thanks in advance!

After a quick bit-o-googling, it seems these were re-branded Tokina lenses ( goo.gl/kBgYGC ), assuming the photos match your lens. I had one of these in its Venmar 135mm clothing, and it wasn't a bad lens - but nothing to recommend it for someone to find and buy. The preset versions can be a pain to use sometimes, for film or digital. Rarity in lenses isn't always what it may seem when it comes to pricing. Anything that's sought after by collectors just for its rarity will be higher priced than an equivalent non-rare one of the same specs. Anything that's sought by users for it's great optics can mean it's seen at a premium price when listed anyway, and the rarity can boost it up a notch. If this really is an early Tokina, then my gut reaction is that it might be a curiosity sale or one based on the sheer numbers produced, since their first lenses weren't particularly lauded for performance or innovation. A suggestion, is to put it up for auction (unless you'll donate it to friends) at the least amount you'd be happy to get if it sold at the opening bid amount. Of course, if it's a stellar performer and better than it's heritage suggests, you can show some samples and show it off to boost the bidding.
