Hello, this is my first post, thank you for accepting me in the forum, I am a new amateur photographer and I have my first DSLR a Canon 40D, I like manual lenses a lot and I have already bought some, making some mistakes of novice by the type of mount (FD per example), but they will go to a collection to take advantage of them later. I have acquired a new lens with its case, Yashica 35-70mm 1: 3.5-4.8, attached photos, I would like to know opinions, if someone has it and if it is a bad purchase or is a low quality lens, I am waiting for the adapter to arrive to start, try it with some pictures. Also I have seen here in my country used a 35-70 3.5-4.5 for USD 50, -, is it worth it or am I left alone with the 3.5-4.8? Thanks for your comments. Greetings from Colombia

Welcome to the Forum, Diego. I don't have a lot of experience with this lens, but we do have a couple of resident experts who can advise you. You might also peruse the Lenses sub-forum to see if there are any posts about it.

Hello, thanks for answering, looking in the sub-forums I found an opinion that helped me, unfortunately it is the ML with the lowest quality, but for the price I bought it USD 28, - for me it's ok, I already have my adapter and taken some test photographs, I find many chromatic aberrations at distances of more than 3 meters and its quality does not stand out much, however I like that it is light and its handling is simple, it also gives a good contrast. Opinion of novice clear, attached some pictures, their criticisms are well received. Welcome to the forum.
It may be the worst Yashica zoom, but a cropped sensor (Canon 40 D) will give you the best of the lens...
You should try some of the primes, generally good to excellent. Check opinions in the forum to learn a bit about the best options.

You did good with "Yashica's worst zoom", Diego. I see it does very well when the light isn't harsh.

As to "Yashica's worst zoom", I'm not sure if I wouldn't rather hand the prize to the MC version of the 35-70mm ...

You did good with "Yashica's worst zoom", Diego. I see it does very well when the light isn't harsh. PF Exactly! From all 35-70's, this is the worst, the latter "MC" introduced Version was also being better, and not made by Cosina, and does have an Metal Body, too ...in comparsion with this "el cheapo" 35-70/3.5-4.8 pseudo ML Lens.
This here, is the cheapest, plasticky, worse "Yashica ML" ever. It doesn't deserve the "ML" moniker for it's build or image quality...but with F8-F11, and good light...it's somehow ok. No comparsion to the best of the ML bunch, the 35-70 3.5 ML Yashica.
I do also own the 40D (10 to 50D, exactly) and i must say, for APS-C (Canon does have x1.6 Cropfactor) the focal range is pretty useless. No wide angle. No standart 35mm in FF-terms. Optically way much better, if you go, choose the current Canon EF-S 18-55/F4-5.6 Zoom Lens. (note the F4-5.6, not the older 2013 STM, which is F3.5-5.6) On my 5D, the 35-70 3.5 ML does make much more sense.
If you can afford it, get the 10-18 STM, the mentioned F4-5.6 18-55 STM, then the 55-250 STM! Perhaps for your "normal" lens desire, get the 24/2.8 STM, too. Then you'd have it, with just 4 lenses, from ultra-wide angle (16mm in FF-terms) up to 400mm (also FF-equivalent) all your focal length desires with way good zooms being covered.
The Yashicas here, as being FF-(SLR) lenses, should being used onto a FF-Body only, means 5D, 6D Series, or even better, with a nice Sony A7 Series Body...and therefore with zero cropfactor, focal length remains the same. At least, the 55-250 STM is almost equal with the Canon 70-200 F4 L Zoom Lens, but renders colors slighty a bit more warm than the L Lens here. It's really Pixel-peeping, to see that the L is subtle better, only.
As there are no split-screen focusing screens for the 40D, that DSLR is being better suited with it's matching EF-S STM Generation Lenses, and the Cropfactor here really sucks, too...with the small APS-C Sensor. You'll have much more fun, using an old(er) 5D or A7 with these Yashica Lenses, trust me.
Just my 2 Cents. Marc

I see. So I've been spared the worst...

I see. So I've been spared the worst... Congrats! There are some iterations being avialable, in terms of Yashica ML moniker, with 35-70mm focal length, at least i do know of these four ones, but maybe even more... The list here is from the best to the worst...into optical terms...
35-70/3.5 ML (the best 35-70 from Yashica, great build quality, decent Optics, close to the Contax C/Y 35-70/3.4, but different) 35-70/4.0 ML (another great 35-70, also ML Zoom, relative rare, 2-Ring Design (Zoom/Focus separately) F4, smaller, but prone to have oily aperture blades (4 out of 5 copies)
35-70/3.5-4.5 MC (good lens - not exactly like the 2 others, but not bad, Metal Barrel & Bajonet Mount)
35-70/3.5-4.8 "ML" (made by Cosina, all plastic build quality, even the lens mount, way cheap - avoid it)
35-70/3.3-4.5 AF (for Yashica AF System SLR, Yashica AF 230 & others - have it here since the late 80's but can't compare it yet, should be a good lens)
greetings

Diego@damco About the Use of Fullframe Lenses onto a APS-C Cropbody, like yours: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDbUIfB5YUcAnd remember also, the DoF-Equivalence is no more the same F-Stop, in correlation to a native FF-lens only a Cropsensor Body.
