Hello all,
Attached to a camera body came as a souvenir a Yashica MC Zoom 28-80 mm f/ 3.9-4.9 lens and I would like to have your opinion and experience with it. I'm not a big fan of zooms in general, so it worth a try?

Hi Ariel,
Based on my experience with the MC 35-70, I would tend to answer in the negative. Incidentally, I recently got hold of a pristine MC 28-80 the same way as you did but haven't brought myself to trying it out yet. Maybe I should, but I don't expect it to rival, or even outdo, my other zooms in that range.

Just what I thought... so I've got a nice looking paperweight then.

If it's not full of fungus or haze, and focuses at infinity, what could be wrong using it? Sure, the MC line wasn't Yashica's finest offering (not really even Yashica by then), but they are probably better than what Vivitar was pushing back then.

I could be wrong (and I'm sure biggles can help on this), but it may have been Kyocera.

I've got this lens and I have used it a few times. On film it is a decent performer along the mid focal range. At 28 is quite soft (the clear result on digital but not noticeable on film to me) and has distortion. It is really difficult to focus with this lens because of the diaphragm.Being a "parfocal" lens, best thing to do is focus at 80, where you can see clearly the details to be able to focus with the outer area of the focusing screen, and then change to the desired focal length. Quite tricky. And finally, the weird design does not allow this lens to use any hood, except when set to certain focal lengths. Nevertheless, it works ok and you can take it with you as an all rounder. By the way, I like the out-of-focus areas in portraits. Quite soft. Some examples below, last one open wide:

MacArron thanks for the review, and nice shots, I will give a go to mine, but for sure the first thing I do no like at all is the trombone-like system (sorry, I do not know the tech term), it looks feeble/flimsy and prone to problems.

Really? Mine came almost new, and the focusing ring and the push-pull zoom is smooth but firm at the same time. Nowadays, I don't see that a problem. As said, main problem is focusing with it, because it is really dark and the microprism collar and the split image of my cameras become useless with this lens But yes, go out and give it a go. Please, revert with the results
