I may be on the wrong forum, so if I am I apologize. But what is the consensus on the Yashica AX model? I am considering a Yashica that uses the M42 mount. And I'd like a better than so-so camera. Thanks for your time

I moved it over here for you. No problem. Sorry I don't have an opinion of the AX, as I've never had one.

Thank you. I'm sorry I fouled it up but I'm just learning and sure don't know all I want to. I'll do better next time.

The Electro AX would not be my first choice. a) you will have a hard (or expensive) time to get to correct batteries b) IIRC it has a mirror construction which renders quite some Yashinon lenses invalid to use

Hi lepidus,
Much as I love the Yashica AX, it is not the best camera to choose if you wish to use a M42 body and marc is quite right when he points out that several of the most popular lenses are incompatible with it.
If you wish to have TTL metering, then you will probably be best off with either the TL-Electro or the TL-Electro X; it is worth remembering that the Electro-X is battery dependent as both versions (TL-Electro X and TL-Electro X ITS) have electronic shutters, while the TL-Electro, interestingly a later camera, has a mechanical shutter and only needs a battery for the meter.
What might be helpful is to pop across to Mike Butkus' superb camera manuals website and download those for the cameras and see what you think - also very useful in identifying the correct batteries to buy! - please remember to make a small donation to his site as he runs it out of the goodness of his heart and those thousands of manuals didn't scan themselves!

Thanks for the information. I believe I'll look elsewhere for another model.

I was racking my brain this afternoon while checking out an AX, trying to remember what you all said in this thread. Of course, with the few neurons I have left that still work, stuff like that doesn't get put in the permanent file, so I bought it anyway. It appears it's going to be a shelf queen, for after I got the film out of it, the internal corrosion became quite evident. I can't even budge the battery cap. But I have one now for the collection, and externally it's in decent shape. Good thing it was 25% off the sticker price.

I just bought one. Regarding that “hard to find battery”, the exact same battery fix that you use in the Electro 35 rangefinders works in the AX as well. Remembering to compose, and then wind and shoot will take some getting used to. Stick to the DS or DS-M lenses if you are using Yashinon short focal length primes. Otherwise, it is a solidly built M42 mount camera, like the rest of the Yashica screw mounts. There are probably better choices for aperture priority screw mounts, but it is not a horrible camera.

I'm with greyscale on this one.
Once you get used to the process of taking a piccie, it's a good, solidly built, typical Yashica M42 SLR and I now enjoy using it. Indeed, so much so that I have been able to find a rare, black version to use alongside my old silver one...
Black AX DS-M 50 1.4
And that DS-M 50 1.4 was a nice bonus; it's a bit rough around the edges but the glass, aperture blades and focusing are all in tip-top condition. That DS-M glass is lovely - every bit as good as the ML versions.

Especially the two buttons onto the right side (left here into the picture) do look very similar to the later 1975 Contax RTS I...but this AX Guy is M42, not C/Y Mount. A cute Copy, Graham.
