Hi twoblink,
Damned tricky! Sadly I don't have the DS version of the f1.7 just the DS-M though I suspect they may be similar.
I recall having a similar problem when reassembling a Zeiss Planar; two long bronze tangs went into two long grooves and locked everything up. As I recall the secret was in opening up the helicoid such as to allow its minimal movement but the actual part critical to focusing was the outer lens barrel which moved in opposition to the exposed threads of the helicoid - at the time it seemed counter-intuitive. Once that was established, then came the messy business of re-collimating the lens - it took quite a few attempts before I got it right. I learned a painful lesson: before taking a helicoid apart, make sure you mark both sections at the exact point where they separate in order to make reassembly a simple procedure...
I'll try to get hold of a DS 50 1.7 and take it apart so that I can reverse engineer your problem if no one can find a solution for you within the next week.

I have taken quite a few Nikkor lenses apart; so in my zeal; I didn't document it.. Someone on the discussion suggested MikeNo on youtube; I have taken a look at his Minolta ones; and they are pretty close. sigh... My wife is yelling at me because I have the lens apart on the table...A dedicated work space is always good to have. PF
