Greetings Forum,
i'd recommand the Canon FD 35-70mm/2.8-3.5 S.S.C. Lens (or the later nFD Iteration) as Yashica ML 35-70/3.5 Alternative lens. Albeit it's not a cheap one, and also not constant aperture, the lens is fast for a Zoom, F2.8 @35mm, and it's IQ also excels for sure. I've made a great deal about this lens some time before.
Whileas being a relative rare & seldom lens, it's more spotted into the wild, being avialable as the Yashica ML 35-70/3.5 lens. Perhaps someday i'd do a comparsion between them, but the thing is, i'd need a FD to e Mount adapter first to compare then onto my Sony A7 then. But that won't being happen anytime so soon...sorry for that.
mir.com write about this Canon FD lens:
"Canon Lens FD 35-70mm f/2.8-3.5 S.S.C. Introduced in December 1973. The FD 35-70mm f/2.8-3.5 S.S.C. was an ideal general lens for a good variety of effects, from wide-angle to moderate telephoto. It was specially designed to correct for all aberrations, eliminating distortion and field curvature. This superbly constructed lens can also perform close-up photography to a distance of 30cm (1 ft) from the film plane when using the FD 35-70mm's built-in macro-shooting capacity. Canon engineers consider this lens one of the finest zoom lenses they have ever made. When the FDn replaced the older types, this lens was still offered in the new series."

...which is why I took the liberty to move lenslover's thread to this category.

Yeah. But does it fit my FX-3?? Way "cold" joke - as everybody knows, Canon FD Mount isn't C/Y Mount.

Yes. For native C/Y Mount, this is clear. But you know what, the ML 35-70/4 is even less being seen "into the wild" than the already rare ML 35-70/3.5. I've seen it 3 times during the past 2-3 years, whereas one copy does have had oily aperture blades and being worn, and the other was also with stuck/defective aperture blades. Oily and/or -defunct aperture blades are quite common with the F4 version, even i don't know really why, missing quality asurance, perhaps? The F3.5 Version never suffered from this issue, albeit is being a 2-Rings Design - which i do prefer, instead of a Push-Pull Lens, which this F3.5 Lens is.

One great alternative is the fixed lens mount Vivitar Macro Focusing Zoom 35-70mm f2.8/3.8. It was manufactured by Komine and is TINY. Yes, it suffers from a variable aperture, but it is a ONE-TOUCH zoom, unlike many 35-70mm zooms. It focuses to one foot (1:4x). 55mm filter thread. Multi-coated. I'm 90% sure it was made available in the C/Y mount.

A quick glance at EBAY shows it in Nikon, Canon, Pentax, and Olympus mounts. I have it in the Minolta MD mount which was the same time period as the C/Y mount, so no doubt it was made in the C/Y mount. EBAY prices vary wildly from $20 to $100. Go figure.

I picked up a batch of lenses and one is a Sigma 35-70 f2.8 "two touch) in CY mount. Gave it a shot today on my NEX 6 and so far.... very impressed with the resolution at 5.6. I will take a few test images in the near future and the 2 touch slows down response time but it is a nice, sharp lens. Compared to an adapted Minolta Maxxum 35-70 lens shows this to be better with less C.A. I have also picked up 2 variations of the Minolta MD 35-70 (one macro and one not) and have not tested those but they are in demand models. Just a note: some of the cheaper Maxxum lenses use an acrylic rear element (at least a 28-8-0 I sacrificed to adapt my Yashica 100 dental to infinity focus did).

The single alternative to this lens is Yashica ML 35-70 F4 I have in my hands as I type this a Yashica MC Zoom 35-70mm f3.5/4.5 lens, so it seems that there is at least one other alternative.

And now, in my hands is a Yashica ML Zoom 42-75mm f3.5/f4.5, which seems another alternative.

Not really, Mike. I had it for many years, it was the kit lens of the 108 MP, my first SLR ever. Back then, I didn't know there were alternatives, didn't even know it was a Yashica lens as it was labeled "Revue", and so was the camera ("Revueflex AC 8"). The MC 35-70 is one of the few poor performers in the Yashica stable.

Did anyone recommend the TOKINA AT-X 2.8/35-70? I owned both, ML 3.5 and AT-X 2.8, both are splendid lenses - and I regret that I sold them.
