Bid on, and won a Contax SLR tonight. Can't say for sure it is a 139 Quartz, as they never showed the back of the camera, but the top view matches the junker I have. Probably wouldn't have bothered with a bid, but it was sporting an ML 28-85. I hope the electronics aren't messed up.

Seems very likely that it will be a 139 as they are pretty distinctive. Hope the Hopefully the ML28-85 is a good one as I've had a few mouldy copies of that lens - It's been my worst from that viewpoint along with the 50/2.

Yeah, the front looks the same too, after closer inspection of the lousy auction photos.
I think certain lens elements are susceptible to fungus, as particular lens models get it more than others, Barry. A lot also depends on storage conditions. The more a lens is used, exposing the interior to sunlight, the less chance it will succumb to fungus.

I do personally avoid nowadays the ML 28-85 Lens...not because it's bad, it's a way nice Zoom, but i simply dislike One-Touch Zooms (and sold my copy therefore) and this 28-85 ML is especially prone for internal Dust, means, the adhaesive used when manufactoring that specific design detoriates over the decades, and always one encounters internal haze, specific kind of fog into the internal lens elements. Trust me, i have had 5 Iterations of this lens, (all collected over the years & decades) and all suffered from the same issue whileas careful inspect them under the light....which may look strange like some kind of fungus or oil onto the lens elements...and i have brought two of them into service for CLA, and sold both copies later, 28-85 ML. Optically, it isn't that far away from the Contax Zeiss 28-85 C/Y lens, which is quite more expensive, and also does have a macro feature the Yashica ML i meant, not the Contax Zeiss. I never had this kind of issues with internal fog, haze onto the lens elements which looks basically like lens fungus or oil with any other ML Type Zoom lens, only the 28-85 ML. (28-50/3.5 ML, 35-70/3.5 ML, 80-200 ML, 28-210 ML & 70-210 ML are free from this, but the 35-70/4 ML is known to have often oily aperture blades) Hope your copy is free from these issues, ridgeblue99.

The camera arrived today, and it is indeed a 139 Quartz. Also, it's badly in need of a new set of seals, and coverings. The mirror bumper has crumbled, and deposited most of itself on the focus screen. Had to familiarize myself with the operation to get the camera to finally work as intended. Well, after taking twenty minutes just to get the batteries to work. I'll have to replace the battery cap with the one from my junker body.
The ML 28-85/3.5-4.5 looks good on the outside, and cleaned up nicely, but is slightly hazy inside. Included was a Vivitar 2x Macro Focusing Teleconverter. The tabs on the back are bent out of shape.
There is also a Vivitar Auto Thyristor 3700 flash that, while it worked with the included batteries (they usually show up corroded as all get out), the flash body itself is broken, and will not allow the bounce head to rotate beyond 45 degrees elevation, though sideways movement is fine.
It's another project camera, but will be worth the effort.

Thanks for the Update, and letting us know about. As i told you, most of the ML 28-85 are suffering from this internal haze, created by the problems i've written earlier. This affects Image Quality. As for your Contax 139 light seals, checkout ebay germany, someone is selling a new set there for arounr 10 EUR, haven't had the link atm, but you'll find it. Good Luck! Marc

A member of another forum gifted me a pack of camera seal material, Marc, so I should be able to replace them with little trouble.

If that Vivitar 2x Macro converter is a 7-element one (probably) and can be fettled back to use, it will give great results with a 50mm ML lens in Macro mode or straight 2x mode. Sharp, evenly flat 1:1 images to come hopefully.
My Teleplus version (clone) with a 50/1.4 T* was my preferred insect set up ...... remove the converter and I was quickly back to standard distance shooting with the 50/1.4.

After letting this subject get stagnant, I once again delved into the bay for another 139. This one is supposed to work on all cylinders, and has new coverings. The serial number looks good (over 150000), so the two major faults should have been engineered out of it. I also ordered a Winder II, TLA20 flash unit, and the Infrared Controller S. Got my fingers crossed with this one. I'll post photos once it all arrives (some may be coming from the blizzard zone, and one piece is coming from Germany).

They are nice little cameras. I keep one now as back up for my 159MM bodies. Just about to re-cover it with some blue leather from Aki-Asahi.

It arrived today, looking like it had just come out of the factory packaging. Seals look okay, but I may replace them and the mirror bumper just to be on the safe side. All functions are good, as far as I can tell without a lens on it (got to dig all that out from my pile of boxes). I didn't have a battery for the Infrared Controller S (takes a 9v cell). Couple that with freezing rain outside, and the lenses in a box somewhere, I didn't get to test it properly today.
But it sure looks nice! I asked the seller where he got the coverings from so that I could match them when the winder arrives from a different seller, hoping he had purchased them from a common vendor. Turns out he made the coverings himself out of an old office chair. The leather was too thick originally, so he shaved it down to the proper size. It was an excellent job, and I might ask him for a piece large enough to recover the winder.
New Year, new gear!
