I've been using an M42 lens labelled "Auto Revuenon f1.4 55mm" for quite some time now, a rebranded Chinon lens that used to come with the Revueflex 5005 SLR (a.k.a. Chinon CE II Memotron) and I've been very pleased with the performance of this lens even when used wide-open. Could this be the reason? Although this specimen looks slightly different from my Revuenon (apart from the different inscription on the bezel), is it possible that mine was manufactured by Tomioka as well? (I mean it's hardly likely anyway that Chinon should have had a lens production facility of their own, is it?) I'd be grateful for any further info you folks can come up with. cheers Michael

From my experience Revuenon 55mm 1.4 lenses are the easiest bargains to come by. My impression is that it is a Tomioka design. Were they manufactured by Tomioka? Maybe but perhaps Cosina.

Here's what I've learned:
Tomioka made lenses for many camera companies other than Yashica such as Polaroid, Chinon, Ricoh, Cosina, and Contax/Zeiss. But these companies also used lenses manufactured by companies other than Tomioka. It makes me wonder if any of latest crop of lenses from Cosina, most notably the Voightlander Heliars (rectilinears as low as 10mm!) are made by Tomioka/Kyocera?

There are also lenses marked Revuenon Tomioka - you won't be surprised to know they command high prices and yet their optical formula is identical to the Auto Revuenon. My brain hurts...

Hello Guys, please read this Story (the non-german Users can use Google Translate (translate.google.com) to translate this whole page from german language into english. -it's all about the Tomioka Myth- (i do know, they've made good lenses, even for Zeiss) www.kameradoktor.de/tomioka1,255mm ...but the Post aka Revuenon 1.4/55mm falls exactly into this myth category here...and needs to be debunked. greetings

Sorry, lenslover, but this text is so extremely wordy, clumsy and over-agitated even in the original language that your recommendation to read it in Google's English 'translation' would amount to attempted manslaughter ... I think the well-known Tomioka myth that the author is trying to debunk, was created by a handful of overenthusiastic German aficionados and should not be taken too seriously indeed. Yet this does not mean that Tomioka did not produce a line of excellent lenses, does it? cheers Michael Edit: I've just made a second attempt to decipher this text, and I find that the harder I try, the more erratic and unclear it gets. I'm not even quite sure if, apart from ranting against the Leitz Noctilux, the author isn't actually insinuating that there never was such a thing as a Tomioka company. In this case, he would be advocating a negative conspiracy theory, as it were, rather than contributing any enlightening new insights...

Hi Michael, the Author isn't ranting about the Noctilux, but about that the whole "Tomoika" Myth is basically created by two Guys back into 2005, which mean basically that lens xy made by Tomioka is basically as good as a Noctilux...which isn't true, and also some more inconsitencies about their statements, about the Tomoika brand. Nothing bad meant. Good light! Marc

No offense taken, Marc, I'm not a fanboy or a fanatic for brand X, Y, or Z and--between you and me and the walls--my favourite M42 lenses are neither Tomiokas nor Yashicas nor Super TAKs but ... EBC Fujinons ... Michael

Hello Michael,
a very good choice - these classic EBC Fujinons...but i must admit, my heart goes for the Yashica ML & Contax Zeiss Lenses. 8) Because of this, i am here, too.

Here's another one Although I've never tried an M42 fujinon. The Fujica AX lenses that I have all feel like modern lenses and can do fantastic stuff with light and detail. The EBC colour is similar to ML too. And who'd have thought! After reading this thread I got myself a nice pair of 1.4s: Revuenon 50mm and a Porst 55mm. Still not sure what version this Porst is, but looks very old. I'll test it next weekend propably. An interesting read (and watch) on this topic: forum.mflenses.com/7-fast-55mm-and-50mm-quick-oof-rendering-comparison-t32963.html-Edit- The 55mm Porst arrived. First impression - it's huge and heavy. Not in the best shape. The front thread was bent and somebody apparently tried to fix this. It's beyond repair at this point. But the basic mechanics are ok and it gives an ok image at 1.4. Will test it more later this weekend. Turns out it's a second version. To my suprise, the diamond-textured focusing ring is all metal. No rubber on it.
