You only need to do that if you are using flash or using a non-TTL metered camera or a hand-held meter.

That is only the case if you are using a non-TTL (i.e., hand-held) meter or a flash. But that is the same case with any variable aperture zoom -- and there are many. It is not unusual at all. It is quite common. A TTL meter takes care of it.
