I noticed that lens a few days ago and have thought about buying it.
Even with a tiny bit of slack in the front, at that price it's worth buying but as I have 3 now, it would be very self-indulgent. The great thing about these lenses is that although they have a very limited focal range, they are a genuine alternative to the 4 classic primes: 28, 35, 45 and 50mm as the lens is sharp and free from distortion at every setting. It was very, very expensive within the Yashica ML range when it was introduced but received 5-star ratings for its build and image quality. It's another of those hidden gems from Yashica...

I know Graham, i do have a backup copy, and that's enough...and the focal range is perfect onto a FF DSLR or -Mirrorless therefore (using onto the 5D) on a APS-C/DX DSLR, because of the Cropsize, it doesn't make sense so much, this Lens. Sometimes i do think you just own every being avialable and prototype lens made by Yashica. Marc

...and it's already being sold. Somebody grabbed it. Well, it wasn't being that ultra expensive when being introduced. Luckily, i've paid for both samples way less than this spanish offering was, and they're like mint condition. -edit- The spanish eBay Offering was fair, not great, but fair (65 EUR)...but look what is that auction: www.ebay.de/itm/Ex-Yashica-ML-Zoom-28-50mm-f-3-5-Manual-Focus-for-Yashica-Contax-Mount-5163-/222353232666?hash=item33c549131a:g:0lQAAOSw44BYWtKIThe Price is absurd >200 EUR, plus taxes then, and shipping costs...and i am way wondering, EXC++ (excellent++) Condition, this Lens isn't ! You can see small usage marks all over the body, my copy is way better, and was hell a lot cheaper. This isn't EXC, and for real especially not EXC++ condition for sure.

Fast forward to 2021, the usual Price (thanks to the Guys from Spain & Japan, since 2020) raised to ~300 EUR for around a year, the cheapest Sample for close to 270 EUR is that Copy, into excellent Condition, if one of you Guys is from Switzerland, let's have a look here: www.tutti.ch/de/vi/zuerich/foto-video/zubehoer/yashica-ml-zoom-28-50mm-f3-5-inkl-koecher-exzellent-selten/42107370It's not worth, for that Price, to ship into the EU, also not with 19% Value added Tax, and also Customs. It's already way expensive.

There's a very nice ML 28-85mm on EBAY right now -- ending in 22 hours. Bidding starts at $37, but no bids yet.

Have a good Sunday!

It seems, more often than not, when a discussion about any particular camera, lens, accessory, etc. is started, someone eventually brings up a similar camera, lens, accessory, etc. Of course, that's difficult to avoid when we are discussing just about any Contax item or Yashica item, since some of them are the same item. I know I learn a lot.

Yes, no Problem. But you know what? The whole Yashica Forum is being indexed by Google, so when somebody, with absolutely no knowledge about Yashica xy Lens, types that into Google, he gets instant results, links to this Forum here, which pushes, into the End, the average Lens Prices, especially when a rare Lens is being sold into the 'bay. And especially also, when Biggles/Graham introduces Lens xy, and raves about it. For this case, i seriously think, a private, non-public Forum about this would be the better solution, into the End.

Sorry, but discussing the pros/cons/rarity of a lens in a forum might not be so direct a connection as it seems when it comes to what final prices are actually paid. If you search for the terms "ML 28-50 f3.5" in a search engine, you will indeed see this very forum post show up in the #1 position in Google's search results, but I wouldn't associate how easy it is to find details and discussions, with the elevated prices paid, or in justifying an inflated value or asking price. I see that as a good thing when you want to get some solid information on an item, and be able to make an informed decision before bidding on or buying one. No need to buy/try/return when you end up with a dud. I have well over 100 saved searches set up on ebay and the greatest number of them are for lenses... with most of those being C/Y mount specific. I'm pretty good at checking all of them every day for what's new, so I see most of the rare ones when they do show up. Regardless of whether I plan to bid on or buy any of them, I do set them into my watchlist and will eventually see what they do sell for IF and when they do sell. That includes the last half-dozen ML 28-50mm lenses that have actually been won or bought outright over the the last half-dozen years, with 3 of them coming up for auction in the last few months. The very last one listed sold for $52 USD, and the one before that went for $86 USD (on a Contax 139), and since my saved history only goes back 90 days to check for an exact price, I think the one before that was in the mid $90 range. The ML 28-85 that xkaes mentioned earlier, sold for $66 USD, and it's the only one I recall being listed in about the last year, so again, semi-rare doesn't always sell for big money. There are 4 of the ML 28-50's sitting as fixed priced sales right now for $297 to over $500 USD, and I see the $1000+ listing is long gone. Someone might buy one of these, although it wouldn't be any one of us, obviously. I expect to see them sit unsold. As I've said before... I own one of possibly 4 known samples of a Pigeon rangefinder model, and rarity alone won't guarantee me a big payday by anyone's valuation. It wouldn't keep me from asking an outrageous amount in 4/5/6+ figures if I ever decided to sell or auction it off, but I'd be a certified nut case to think anyone would actually pay those asking prices.

It makes me laugh every day.
It is truly amazing what some people think they can get for a supposedly rare item on EBAY -- when it's really quite common.
On the other hand, I've run across some unusual and great items that the seller listed for auction at 0.99¢. They didn't know anything about it, took lousy pictures, no description at all, etc.
I received a like-new 80-200mm lens yesterday for 0.99¢. Today, I'm getting another.
The only issue is the cost of postage -- but some EBAY sellers are clueless about that as well.
FYI, there are deals to be had. I'm "eye-balling" a very nice Cosina zoom right now where the seller just has a picture of the BOX!!!!
The Yashica LYNX 1.4 went for $115, as I recall -- nice camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen today, that the last ML 28-50/3.5 was being sold for 113 EUR... Xkaes, fine for you, but only you got one bargain this cheap, that is not the usual eBay Price, which you need to understand! But that's usually NOT the case being here, a ML 80-200/4 goes usually for not less than at least 30-40 EUR.
There is one ML 28-85/3.5-4.5 from France, for 99 EUR plus Shipping, but it looks into "rocked hard" Condition, i wouldn't buy. Personally, i've went through no more than 7 Samples from that Lens, and 5 of them always had Nebula, -Dust inside, as being said some long time before into another Thread here, i won't buy this Zoom Lens again, because i've let it being fixed, cleaned, CLA'ed some years ago, at least 2 Samples, and that internal fogging came back, between 12-26 Months, so the Money being spent was totally being wasted, only a temporary Solution.
That Adhaesive inside is vaporizing inside, between some Lens Elements, which causes that fogging, so even this Lens is being good, i seriously can't recommand it, because of this. My Samples have all being bought between 95-2016, onto the used Market, 2 of them have been totally NOS, with Box, Paper and all original Packaging.

You are correct. You never really know what you get -- until you get it. I've had some bad deals on EBAY, but I was always able to resell them on EBAY -- often at a better price -- thanks to better pictures and a more honest description.
Still, I've found a gems because sellers really didn't know what they had.
I just bought a Minolta X-7A with a 50mm lens -- for next to nothing. The seller listed it with a couple of cheap Polaroids, and never mentioned the Minolta SLR.!!!! Seek and ye shall find.

As xkaes says: 'seek and ye shall find'... But don't limit your searches to the usual places such as Ebay, Catawiki, Etsy, etc. It's also worth visiting retail shops in a variety of countries which regularly have Yashica/Contax gear in stock. I have around 30-40 shops around the world - admittedly most in Europe - that I trawl frequently and even the big internet retailers like keh.com can provide bargains if you check them regularly. And don't be frightened of making an offer; just because a price is listed, it does not always mean that it's final. Some of the more obscure Yashica items I've found recently have been from shops in Finland, France, Italy and Sweden (great for Contax gear) and in these strange times, many owners are happy to receive sensible offers from overseas buyers. It just requires a little persistence and for those who are in lockdown during the CoVid crisis, it's quite a pleasing way of whiling away a few hours. And you simply never know what you might find...

As you say, KEH and other used camera shops often list items at incredible prices. Lately, KEH is selling "bundles" of old, used gear that they want to get rid of -- starting 1t $0.99¢ with shipping around $5. They sell the bundles as "AS IS", but plenty of the stuff is unbreakable. I always bid really low and haven't won anything yet, but I have bought stuff from them in the past, and they are always in better shape than they describe.
