I've decided to have a look at some of the older Yashica M42 lenses - not my exotics like the Tomioka 60mm Macro or the Auto Yashinon 55 1.2 - but the workaday ones such as 50mm, 35mm and 135mm optics.
I've just grabbed a lovely Auto Yashikor 35mm f2.8. It is an excellent example and I've taken a few snaps with it in my garden and its bokeh is smoooooth and colour rendition is, surprisingly, identical to the ML 35mm.
A piccie of the lens alongside an Auto Yashinon 50mm f2.8 is attached.

I think I've shied away from doing anything in the M42 line for the time being because all the cameras I have are junk. That, and other priorities.

I just received this beauty - the 50 1.7 Auto Yashinon DS-M. It is joyously sharp and produces colours which match those of the ML 50 1.7.
These 2 images were taken full frame, the first being the DS-M.
I should have used a tripod but grabbed these hand-held so the critical point of focus is slightly different in the slight breeze but if you check the purple-fringed leaf top centre, you can make the comparison. The old M42 is quite a match for the C/Y ML.

Hi Biggles3,
i've thought you don't have access to a FF-DSLR right now....so it would be nice if you can keep your promise and do finally your 35-70 Yashica Lens Series Comparsion, because other & myself would be very interested to see this...instead of just talk, no offence. :-)
Good Light ! Marc

Marc Hi Marc,
Thanks for the reminder. Unfortunately I sold my Canon to mpb.com last week and am in the process of clearing all the rest of the Canon gear; I needed to fund the purchase of a replacement 45-90 for my Contax 645 . The only reason I bought the Canon in the first place was to take shots for this Forum but I will get another ff digital camera very soon (not sure which system to go for but it will need weather-sealing given where I live) though I'll have to sacrifice some of my C/Y gear to help pay for it; I have at least 3 different sets of lens comparisons to run when I have one. The 35-70 will be the first.
Having said all of that, if I can find the time, I might go 'old school' and take out an RTS and a Preview and shoot film and then scan it - the only problem is that I no longer have a dedicated film scanner and will have to rely on my ancient Canon 8400F for the purpose. It's OK for non-critical work but might not be up to the task as the film holders are pretty basic.
Please be patient for a little longer....
