Folks,
'Love makes you blind', as a German saying goes. I guess in my case it was plain greed that blinded me to the fact that the eBay super bargain I was hoping to strike was not an ML, but a DSB 4.0/70-210mm. (Although there was only one picture of the coveted object, attached to some Canon DSLR, any fool could have seen this, of course, so I don't deserve any better.)
So ... can any of you guys share any personal assessment of this lens with me? I mean, I wonder if it's worth the while testing this zoom lens with a roll of film or whether I'd better dump it right away and donate it to the thrift shop. On the web I hardly seem to find any info on it. (Maybe I should add that, apart from the incomparable Variosonnar, I already own an ML f4.5 of identical focal range, which I'm not so terribly fond of, as well as an ML 4.0/80-200.)
Many thanks in advance for any helpful hints!
Michael

The DSB lens is a pretty decent performer. I've not owned one but had the opportunity to use one a while back and was surprised at the high quality, and decent contrast, it could provide. With 8 aperture blades, it gives a pleasing bokeh too. It is not a match for the ML version but is certainly the equal of the 80-200 which is a pretty decent lens too. The only caveat is that if the lens has taken a heavy knock at some time, elements in the front group can become de-centred resulting in a softening of focus which is too expensive to correct.
If you have a good example - and they're not that common as they had a short production life - it should be a keeper.

Hope it performs as mentioned above. At least I now have a wide, normal and some tele to shoot with. It gets me going, for now, ITM I can start looking for decent ML glass. Regards, Peter

Yes, I did a couple of test shots on film and find it a decent performer. Solid build quality too. No match though for my Vivitar or Zeiss Variosonnar zooms, so I decided to give it away.

Thanks. I'll just have to discover myself, ofcourse.... I agree it's a solidly built lens.
I can test it against an EF 70-200 L f2,8 lens on my EOS 1n ... Or a Takumar bajonet zoom 70 - 210 f4,5 ...
Will take a while though.

When you say Vivitar,..... you mean the Series 1, I presume??? And the f3,5 one? ( A Tokina build version ( serialnr starting with 37 ) is on its way ... :-) ) vintagelensreviews.com/vlr/reviews/vivitar-tokina-series-1-70-210-mm-f3-5/The minimum focussing distance of the DSB is 2,5m .... Vivitar 1,2m... Better suited for portraits... Finally I have a chance to learn more about the legendary lens. image postphoto uploading websites

Nope, tts, I meant the 28xxxx version from Komine. But chance has it that a Tokina-Viv just came floating by as I was sitting on the dock of the electronic bay ... I'm just hauling it in...

Good for you. Some say the Tokina ( Viv version 2 ) is preferable. Well, that's the one I've got... ( well, almost... It's in the mail. ) Komine is version 3, isn't it? Also f3,5....

allphotolenses.com/lenses/item/c_3864.html Have you seen this page. I have the Yashica DSB 70-210mm f4 since I bought the Yashica FR-1 in 1979. I haven't used it in years and had it packed away. I bought a Nikon d750 a few months ago. I just found I could buy a fotodiox adapter for the lens to fit my Nikon. I have ordered one and cannot wait to see how it performs. I also have the Yashica DSB 50mm f1.9 and am eager to try that on my Nikon. Best, Gary

Best, Gary The adapter from C/Y to Nikon F mount needs a glass in the middle to compensate, so no matter how good is the lens you attach to it the quality of that glass will affect the final results. Please, once you get the adapter share the test pictures with us here.
