Hi folks,
I'm finally starting to make a photographic record of my Yashica gear to marry with my Excel sheets listing the equipment. Among the many photos taken over the last two days, this one struck me as quite noteworthy as it contains a few Yashica rarities; it got me wondering what gems our Forum members may own and wish to share...
In this piccie you will spot a FX-A, ML 55 1.2 with rectangular hood, ML 70-210 f4 and the final version of the DX Medical 100mm f4 with the uprated circuitry (eagle-eyed viewers might also spot that this lens has the doubler in place too); boxed are the ML 100 f3.5 Macro and the ML 100-300 f5.6 zoom.
Any one else got a few rarities to share; how about a few exotic wide-angles...?

Nice, nice, nice. I am wondering if you have extra copies of the 55mm

I thought I'd add another shot of a rare lens and its smaller companion - I would describe them as wide-angle heaven, being my two favourite non-Zeiss wide-angles (other than the early Tamron SP 17mm and Kiron 28 f2):
When Yashica got it right, it really did!

Nice, but you need to get one of those product shot tents and some lights so we can see them in all their glory!
BTW, where would a CZ Tessar 2.8/45 fall in the rarity column?

I disagree. In my opinion the main reason online stores use white tents is because their websites have sterile, white background. Using same white background in their photos makes the products look like they're physically sitting on the website. It also makes it look less busy when there is a lot of products. I think what you really need is cleaning them

Nice. The ML 21/3.5 is great, that and the Zeiss 18/4 convinced me to get rid of my Canon 16-35/2.8 about 5-6 years ago and I never missed it.
I was less convinced the ML 24/2.8 which IMO is good but not great on my Sony A7r. I like 24mm and have owned quite a few and, in the end, I find myself in agreement with the big group test from ages ago on 16:9 - the sharpest vintage 24 is the Olympus OM 24/2.8. I did however hate the super-high contrast, cyan tinged rendering of the Olympus.
One final thought on the 24mm range - none of the vintage 24mm primes I've tried produce an image which is as pleasing overall as my Canon 24-70L f/4 IS.

PF The Tessar 45/2.8 falls a bit behind other Contax Zeiss lenses - its a nice Pancake, but nowhere as good as the 50/1.7 MM.

It's a fairly common lens though it tends to be rather overpriced these days. It's a very competent performer and was designed for street photography, inviting you to pre-set the lens to f8 (marked in green) and at the arrow on the distance scale giving you focus and a good dof from around 3m to near infinity. It was introduced back in 1983 and remained in production, albeit not in huge quantities, until lens production ceased. It was launched in conjunction with the Contax 137MA and made a popular combination with press/street photographers as there was no need for manual winding and focusing was pre-set if desired. It is a classic Tessar design and remains the smallest lens produced by Zeiss or Yashica for the C/Y system.
What is very rare though is its Contax 49/55 Adapter Ring as well as the very limited Contax 49mm filter range. The Adapter Ring was introduced because it was assumed, probably correctly, that a lot of adopters of the tiny Tessar would already own a Zeiss prime and many of those lenses used a 55mm filter of which there were many variants.
The lens makes a lovely partner for the Contax 137s, 139 and Aria; I also regularly have one attached to a FX-3 as it's a combination that fits safely inside a jacket pocket. Contax decided to create a special silver version of the lens as part of the Contax 159+W-7 anniversary kit. People ask crazy prices for this 'metal-finish' kit BUT they are very prone to paint loss so beware before you buy!

I've been meaning to give mine a test, but have been distracted lately by pressing matters. I've added to the ML and CZ stable since then, so it should be a full blown "bag full of lenses" excursion. Gave my 139 and winder another look-over, hoping maybe I could get by with just a set of covers, and they both conked out on me. The camera is back in mirror-up mode which was where I started, and the winder would run whenever it wanted to, and as long as it wanted to. I'm going to start over by replacing both of them.

I have the Zeiss 45 and have used it with my (non-anniversary) 159MM. It's a great little package. Mine arrived with the 49/55 ring which looks really nice on the lense, like a tiny hood and it does give the front element some protection so you don't need a 'protect' filter.
As it goes (since this is the rare lens thread) I have briefly had the ML 55/1.2 in my possession for a few days, but never tried it. I just bought cheap and sold dear, quickly as I was afraid I'd want to keep it!
